It's only on school products approved by the state. So, don't go out and buy a boat expecting a tax break.

I thought there was also one before Christmas, but I can't find anything about it. It is just 3 days...Friday-Sunday (Aug 1-3)

Its not just on school supplies like pencils and paper...

Code Section 12-36-2120(57) exempts from the sales and use tax:
(a) sales taking place during a period beginning 12:01 a.m. on the first Friday in August and ending at twelve midnight the following Sunday of:
(i) clothing;
(ii) clothing accessories including, but not limited to, hats, scarves, hosiery, and handbags;
(iii) footwear;
(iv) school supplies including, but not limited to, pens, pencils, paper, binders, notebooks, books, bookbags, lunchboxes, and calculators;
(v) computers, printers and printer supplies, and computer software;
(vi) bath wash clothes, blankets, bed spreads, bed linens, sheet sets, comforter sets, bath towels, shower curtains, bath rugs and mats, pillows, and pillow cases.
(b) The exemptionallowed by this item does not apply to:
(i) sales of jewelry, cosmetics, eyewear, wallets, watches;
(ii) sales of furniture;
(iii) a sale of an item placed on layaway or similar deferred payment and delivery plan however described;
(iv) rental of clothing or footwear;
(v) a sale or lease of an item for use in a trade or business.

Some stores that don't have tax free items will discount items to make them "tax free"...I know there is a matress store in Charleston advertising tax free this weekend. Clothing includes all clothing...including wedding gowns!

In 2006 there was a tax holiday that Friday and Sat. after Thanksgiving but I don't believe there has been one since.

That sounds right to me. I think it has to be approved every year and it wasn't last year.

I'm spending $3.59/gal gas. Can't afford school supplies this weekend. BTW the stores are usually packed during this freebie!

g-man430, thanks for the info. I was led to believe there was no sales tax on all items, so its good to get that clarified. Also, I was not planning on buying a boat! I already own one that I'm still paying for and not using! As a matter of fact, I need to fly back to Calif. in Sept. and drive my truck and boat to SC. Any chance gas will go back down to $2 per gallon by then????

Thanks ah090206;

Looks like I can still pick up quite a few things I need for my daughter plus a few things for the house and save a few bucks!

I'm going out to San Francisco next Thursday. I could bring it back for you.

I think 'tax-free' is just a gimmick. If you go out and spend $300 on a child for clothes, supplies, backpatc, etc you'll save what... approximately $21? Is it worth that to fight crowds similar to those of Black Friday? Especially when you consider that if you've watched sales the last several weeks and continue to watch them over the next few weeks leading up to the new school year, you'll be able to save at least that much - if not more - and not have to corral through a big, hot, muggy, sweaty, stinky crowd. Several weeks ago Walmart had spiral notebooks marked down to $.10 each. I bought 20 of them for my daughter for drawing, song-writing, etc. That's not the only sale on back-to-school items I've seen.
