This is all media crap. His wife said she is NOT concerned. I applaud him for turning down the stimulus money. All the less money my children and grandchildren have to pay back. He's a much better man than O!

unfortunately, your children and grandchildren will be paying for it regardless of where it goes, that's the problem, if he refused it and we didn't have to pay for it anyway there wouldn't be an issue....

I'm sure he is a good man and have no doubts he has done some good for SC, he just needs to jump down off his high horse and realize what he is doing is not helping right now.

The reason he has been politically ostracized on his "stimulus" stance is because that massive amount of borrowed money was already delegated by the Congress and the Senate to be divided among each state for "economic stimulus." If SC or any other state decided to refuse the money, it would be spent elsewhere and we taxpayers would ultimately still be responsible for its payback. Basically it boils down to this; take it or leave it, but you're still paying for it regardless of your choice or belief.

Yep, Skyliner is absolutely correct. I challenged someone on the forum on this point. They sent me a link to the stimulus information, which was convuluded at best. So I emailed the Governor's office requesting clarity. One of his staffers called me on Friday and confirmed that YES, even if we had not taken the money, it would have been reappropriated and SC citizens paying Federal taxes would share the burden of paying the funds back. In light of that truth, I am very disappointed the Governor chose to make a political (grand)stand at the expense of what is best for our state. I, too, disagree with the bailouts and stimulus. FDR's New Deal was a good thing. This stimulus and auto industry bailout are not. The banking/mortgage debacle necessitated government intervention to prevent a full-out economic failure. But, grudgingly, I have come to believe that Gov Sanford's political aspirations clouded his judgement on this issue.

That goes without saying. Obama cant even be compared to Mark Sanford. You cannot compare a socialist to a patriot.

I believe the point missed by everyone, but Sanford, is that a big chunk of the money that he wanted to turn away is to be used specifically to fund new state jobs. The stimulus funds the jobs for 2 years. After the 2 years, the state is committed to continue funding those jobs. We are already in debt as a state (and nation). By taking the money and guaranteeing to fund new jobs in 2 years, we have kicked the can down the road and will be in bigger trouble 2 years from now since our gov't will then be even bigger.

As for his disappearance, I think his PR people were a little slow on their response, but I'm thinking the media could have easily constructed their interview with Sanford's wife and staff to make the whole thing seem fishier than it really is. Look at all the hatred on this forum for the guy. Now think that he is out in the woods alone. His Lt. Gov (Bauer) was just crying about not having a security detail. Do you really think his staff should disclose the Governors location given his vulnerability? Really? I also think Bauer is trying to make a name for himself over all this. I hope, in the end, he comes out looking like Alexander Haig.

I was thinking that if Sanford wants to run for President, someone's going to have to coach his wife on better statements to the press. "Wants to write and needs to get away from the kids"? Doesn't sound good, particularly not on father's day...

I think that is how one could tell that this was more of a political hack job by the "reporter." I suspect she may have used all of those words, but in a different context and perhaps with other words mixed in. This whole "story" seems like it has been trumped up and overblown and I think the "journalist" wrote this to be sensational - misstatements and all.

I was once with a Congressman on a trip to South America to explore business opportunities for the state that I was living in. The hack job that the other parties' Senetors' aides wrote up and distributed to the papers was incredulous. It stated the Congressmans' wife was with us (lie), we were on the beach (lie), etc... I was dumbfounded, but the congressman said that this was business as usual for Congress. Opposing parties put out these wild assertions in articles and if 1 in 50 gets picked up, they have a victory. Clearly this is 1 in 50. One more reason to throw ALL the bums out in the next election. Have no doubt that Bauer and Jake Knotts are behind this whole thing. THROW THEM OUT!

I'd like to see Gov Sanford move to Greenville, where he would feel more at home. But leaving us with A Bauer in charge - Omigod, run for the hills!

I can't believe the media has made such a big deal about this. Leave the guy alone, he needed to recharge a bit and didn't want to be bothered.
