My wife and I are looking to retire where the climate is warmer, not too far from the beaches, and where the populace is educated, inquisitive and open-minded. We are liberals but don't push our views on anyone, and expect the same in return. We have spent our lives in the Rocky Mountain West and Southwest. I am not sure how we will handle the humidity. We appreciate beautiful mountain scenery and colors. Of course, we intend to visit for an extended stay and then maybe rent for some time. Are any Coloradans in the area?

We just moved to Fort Mill, SC from Colorado. Hubby & I both grew up in small towns on western slope (Hotchkiss & Crawford) and had lived in Grand Junction for the last 17 years. We have only been in the area for a month now but really like it so far. Very green and lush and the people are all very friendly and welcoming to outsiders. There are a ton of things to here if you want entertainment. Charlotte is just a few minutes away and the mountains are a couple hours, not to mention the beaches are a few hours away also.

Let me know if I can answer any questions.

You should definitely to check out places in and around Greenville, SC, Hendersonville, NC, and Asheville, NC. These each match you criteria and are wonderful places to live.

As for Coloradan transplants in the area, there must be at least a few, as I have seen several Colorado tags in the vicinity and know at least one family who moved to Greenville from the Denver area.

I would highly suggest the Columbia area. It has a very large educated population base (USC, SCSU, Benedict, Allen, ect.) It's about 2 hours from either the beaches or mountains. Columbia is a bit m ore liberal than most cities in SC and the Richland Northeast area has a good mix of transplants and "new south" developments. The city for the most part has a live and let live mentality.

Good Luck!

I'd also say that Columbia sounds like a good match for you guys for all the reasons mentioned above. You would be equidistant from the mountains (that you're familiar with) and the beaches. It's also has the most educated population base for a central city in SC (thanks in large part to being the home of the state's flagship university). However, you guys may have a tough time adapting to a much warmer climate, but you won't die.
