I'm thinking about renting a temporary place in either downtown Deadwood or Spearfish for a while to see if I like living in the area. I would need to live in a walkable area close to groceries, restaurants, etc. as I don't have a vehicle at the moment.
Would either of these spots work without a vehicle, or would that be unadvisable?
Deadwood would be easier with no car, its smaller and the grocery store (if its still in business) is within a few blocks of downtown, I used to live behind it when I was a kid and I lived there.
The grocery in Deadwood closed earlier this year. While there are plans in the works to replace it, I don't think anything has been done yet. I could be wrong, though!
Again? it seems to close every year because no one shops there....I think there is still one in Lead, which is a taxi ride away but Spearfish would be better I guess depending on where you live there. Deadwood is smaller and more easily walkable than Spearfish but the weather makes it tough as well.
I moved to Spearfish a couple of months ago and I don't have a car, it's totally doable if you really want to. (And heck, all the walking has helped me lose a ton of weight, haha)
I ended up with a place out towards the canyon, so for me getting to places will be quite the walk. Stores are just under 2 miles, campus ends up just under 3 miles etc. Carrying groceries can end up getting quite heavy with the walk I have, but I've been incredibly lucky with fantastic landlords and great neighbor that I can get a lift to the grocery store and I usually just shop for a week or two at the time
So yeah, totally doable, but I know for me I'm aiming to get a license and a car as soon as I can so it'll be easier to move around without being dependent on others or planning on walking waaay before I need to be somewhere.
I think Deadwood would be tough without a car - there is next to nothing for shopping for your essentials - a taxi ride to the Lead stores would be a regular requirement (which there is decent taxi service IMO). I don't think the city of Deadwood realized (in 1989) the impact gaming would have on non gaming ventures. In retrospect many locals wished commercial zoning would have been reviewed before it was passed to encourage non-gaming commerce to supplement the gaming ventures.
