Sylvan Lake is at the base of the Harney Peak Trailhead. If you stay at Sylvan Lake and do the hike you'll be at the top of Harney Peak which is the highest point between the Rockies and the French Alps. The hike is only 6 miles (I think) and it's really fun. Friendly people on the trails and there's a watchtower at the summit.

Thanks again. I think I'm going for Legion or Stockade North. I made a mistake on the length of the trailer for Sylvan - all of the good spots were taken. Luckily, I had made more than one reservation. I'll use one of those for the trip home - maybe at Oahe Downstream Rec Area - that looks super nice.

You can't go wrong camping in Custer - you won't be disappointed! We have camped in Stockade North, and it's a very nice campground. Definitely make time to do the wildlife loop at least once, but make sure you plan for early morning (before 9 am) or early evening (between 5-6) to get the best views. Oh, and take apples or carrots for the Begging Burros - your kiddos will thank you! We have to make a special trip to the grocery before we go every time now - my 10 year old can't sit still in the car until we get to the burros!
Not sure what your tow rig will be. However once you hit Sioux Falls heading west you have a nearly constant climb and it will seem like things are pulling hard.
i am old so I do all my camping in Deadwood in one of them fancy hotels-- you know the ones with running water and one of the new fangled toilets that are inside the building -- i am tired of doing my business with a snake staring at me

F-150, 5.4V. Well, it gets worse than that. First time we'll be doing this, outside of one or two "test" trips.

Thanks for the heads-up on the burros! Funny, there wasn't any mention of roving/begging burros in the description.
I'm still undecided - Legion or Stockade. Legion, we are close to the water, bigger site, Stockade has a nice, shady spot, but closer to the road.
