It is very overwhelming, I'm trying to find the best person I can for my son who desperately needs some counseling. But there are so many so called specialists out there, how in the world can you find the best there is? I'm in the S. Charlotte area if that helps, actually in SC.

Thanks for any advice!

Have you talked to your pediatrician? I'd start there. Or your local school's guidance department. Good luck.

Local school is a good idea. Forgive me if you already know some of this, but:

First know that a psychologist is a PhD and a psychiatrist is an MD. So if you believe medication is in order, go to a psychiatrist. In general, you want a psychologist for 'talk therapy' - counseling or behavior management. Now, you can go to a PhD, but there are also many master's level psychology licenses that are very competent. What they call themselves will depend on your state.

But if you are seeking counseling/therapy, there should be some questions that any therapist can answer when you call to ask about their services. What type of therapy they provide, and what is their theoretical basis for the therapy? In general, the therapist should NOT be put off by that question and should be able to answer without hesitation. Some things you might hear are 'Reality Therapy' or 'Cognitive/Behavioral therapy'. Both are good and based in research driven methods. 'Play therapy' can be good or bad. It depends again on what the therapeutic basis for the play is...and also how old the child is.

I hope that helps you get started.

Well here's an idea: since you posted here in this forum. Why not try to hit up the forum for SC, more specifically your area. It seems the forum closest to you would be under Charleston- It may be a relocation forum but many of the people on that forum are regulars and locals, often they have good knowledge of the resources in their areas. They may have some information, or even experience to pass along

Go to Behavior Analyst Certification Board

click on consumer information
scroll down and go to find a certificant (on the left side)
click on that and put in your town or zip code.

You will get a list of people who are BCBAs or ABCBAs and you can email them through the website.

Charlotte, actually, and I have also posted there, no luck though. Thanks!

Like others have suggested, I would talked with your pediatrician or family doctor. You could also contact the school district in your area. Good luck to you.

You can call the North Carolina Psychological Association for a referral in your area:

Referral Service - North Carolina Psychological Association

or South Carolina:

South Carolina Psychological Association - Public Information and Resources

Are you in NC or SC? I am in SC, and it depends on where you are. Charleston, Florence and Columbia are pretty good, but Myrtle Beach is definitely lacking. It took a while for my child to get his diagnosis (we started at 2 and got diagnosed at 5). When we took him to his Pediatrician, he told us he was just "quirky." Three years later, there is no denying that he has autism.

I spent a year researching doctors here and feel that we have finally found the best doctors who do not have a 8-12 month waiting list. If you need some names, I am happy to help

I second the BACB website. Also, to get your started, read Robert Schramm and he will explain the 7 steps to instructional control. His 7 steps should be what your parent training should include to put inappropriate behavior on extinction and increase appropriate behavior.
Good luck!
