There isn't much about the Idaho locations mentioned I consider particularly "boonie" in comparison to the Spokane area. If anything, Coeur d'Alene/Hayden/Sandpoint strike me as a bit more urbane--perhaps due in part to the large influx of Southern Californian refugees gradually displacing what's left of the local population. Spokane, on the other hand, has long been a magnet for folks from smaller Eastern Washington towns looking for work and opportunity. Not that they necessarily find it here.

The tweakers of Spokane are home-grown right here in the Biggest Little Hick Town in the World. Their migration to the area started in the 80's, I believe. Since then, they've enjoyed almost free reign to hybridize
a bigger and better gangsta.

Well, if you are comparing the relative "liberal-ness" of the central areas of Couer d'Alene and Sandpoint, then I agree with you. And I agree that this is due to the influx of SoCal residents and Seattleites retiring to the area. It is no different in some resort-type towns in Eastern Washington, such as Twisp and Leavenworth.

I guess I don't really understand why the locals in Spokane are somehow inferior to your SoCal transplants moving to North Idaho. I don't think that everyone would agree with what you're implying, that somehow the more liberal an area is, makes it more livable.

The demographic in question is actually quite red in comparison to Spokane (just compare voting records side by side via City Data if you have any doubts). The refugees fleeing LA/Seattle for the Inland Empire tend to lean conservative, and they’re having a field day terraforming N.Idaho--especially Kootenai County--into another version of their home turf complete with strip malls, traffic, and seemingly endless tract homes. Something similar appears to be happening on our end of the border albeit on a lesser scale. Spokane County must have better restrictions on unbridled growth.

It's certainly a problem, even the North Koreans are having problems with it. Cheap ways to numb your soul are always popular with segments of every population.
