Let down by Spokane (Seattle, Tacoma: living, move to, oil)

Please don't take offense to his posting. Like I said we really had high hopes for Spokane but it just didnt seem to work for us.

Spokane is not as active as Seattle, but Spokane is more conservative than Seattle. I know, it appears from your visit that Spokane is not conservative. You're right, but Seattle is even MORE liberal and out-of-control with respect to children and how they are raised. The West Coast is far more lax in it's parenting as a whole, and permissive parents reap poorly-performing children.

The regular people are out-of-sight in fear of the violent, rebellious youth. They sure as hell aren't standing up to discipline their kids.

Downtown is slower, but the recent heyday of Spokane was Expo '74, the World's Fair, which was a blast!

Spokane is no Seattle, which is good for some things. I encourage you to make contact with a church in Spokane, and spend some time with the people who live there, then ask frank questions. I would not shy you away from Spokane, but at the same time I won't lie to you; what you saw from the youth is par for the course today. St Louis had some kids like this but not as many, right?

The city isn't walkable. The downtown is small, and I don't like the crowds there neither in the daylight, nor in the dark. There are a few parks, but they're so ridiculously tiny and are not worth visiting more than once imo. You can walk end to end in a few minutes, and it gets crowded. The only half-decent park is Manito, which is no prize either, but that's the only place you can actually come back to... once or twice.

So, it's either bars... or home. Or outside the city.

Spokane isn't perfect but I'm not sure I've heard anyone complain about a lack of parks. Spokane has, in my opinion, a great parks system. The following list is rather inclusive but gives an idea about the number of parks in Spokane:

Do what everyone else now does in Spokane on the Fourth of July: stay out of the park you pay for with your tax dollars so that a bunch of unwashed scumbags can act out the political fantasies of their 1960s-era parents, with the full support of the local media and legal profession.

Spokane is the one city of size in the state of Washington which is moderately conservative. Since the money and power in this state is in far-left Seattle, Spokane is slowly being converted to a me-too little stew of lefties.

If you move here, you'll be an eyewitness to that.

So think about it. Long and hard.

At the risk of derailing this thread, you think the legal profession and the media should not support the First Amendment? The whole idea contained in the First Amendment is that the people have the right to free expression and assembly, even if their message is repugnant to the vast majority of others. Just to make sure we're not totally stereotyping here...my teen daughter looks much like the girl in Yeledaf's picture(minus the police escort!). Right now, she's at a week long conservative Christian youth camp. Last week she told me she's interested in joining a right-wing anti-abortion group(not my idea of fun) and saving her money to go serve the poor in some 3rd world country. Fashions don't necessarily dictate passions! Nor are her father and I burnt-out hippies--far from it.
So, don't assume that every kid in black is an anarchist. If the worst rebellion my daughter has is her morbid fashion sense and a blonde shock of hair(and so far it has been...), I'll count myself very lucky. :~) D

Completely irrelevant. "Anarchists" ( a misnomer, since these people hardly reject structured society when it serves their purposes) exist in Spokane, and their numbers are growing with support from like-minded individuals in both Spokane and Seattle.

Appearances are, I agree, deceiving. My references are not to their sartorial proclivities, weird as they may be, but to their hateful and disrespectful attitude and behavior. Look at the girl in the picture again...

I am well aware of the Constitutional protections of free speech, even when uttered by morons and cowards. I am also aware of the stainless steel toilet bowl that the First Amendment has become.

That does not make the "Anarchists" and their supporters among the shysters and the "media" like the S/R immune from criticism and well-desrved scorn.

I am indeed well within MY rights to deplore and call attention to the ugliness that has infested our city with the rise of the "Anarchists" and their annual disrespectful sabotaging of the Fourth of July in Spokane, which as you are well aware is nothing more than an excuse for them to publicly thumb their noses at our city and our country -- all at taxpayer expense -- while hoping desperatley to provoke violence and ill-feeling among everyone else in Riverfront Park.

I note with interest that my thread on the Fourth of July in Spokane has been expunged. I assume you agree that that violates MY freedom of expression...

The distinction is between actively supporting the message (which most media and lawyers do not) and supporting the right to convey the message. For the latter, scorn is not well-deserved.

Actually, I don't. This is a private forum and as such the content can be regulated as the people who run this board see fit. First Amendment rights only apply to government suppression of speech.
