Hi all, I'm 29 and am not getting any younger. I've been working out and feel great but I was wondering what sport should I take up in my free time. I want to go to competitions and need to know which sport can I take up to go semi-pro? Its a wild thing to start up this late in the game but I'm curious. I played high school soccer avid club youth soccer, so I was thinking US futsal might be good. It would he easy to restart. I played rugby for a semester while in college too. Other than that my other interests are in chess, if ya count that as a sport. Really thus thread is about if there is life in sports at 30?
When is 30 touted as being old all of a sudden? Many professional athletes play their respective sports well into their 30s and some even are talented enough to play into their early 40s.
Check your local community to find pickup games for things such as basketball, softball, soccer, etc.
You may be late in the game to have any realistic shot at anything in the professional level but you've got plenty of life left to pretty much do whatever you'd like to do.
Its not that 30 is too old physically, its the years spent developing the talent at a sport doesn't come fast, or even to everyone. Almost everyone can get themselves in shape and be more athletic. Futsal is as good an idea as any other, though, since you've already played. Weightlifting or Powerlifting are other options, as most don't hit their peak strength til after thirty anyway.
Other options too that will last you well into the prime years of your life...
Golf and Tennis.
I've been playing golf my whole life and it's nice knowing it's something I can continue to do well into my retirement years. It's also something you can do by yourself or with a few friends that doesn't have to be organized at all.
Most people I know, myself included gave up the 'contact' sports in my early 30s. Rec league hockey, hoops, soccer & softball no more. We moved toward golf (but hard to find the time) and bowling (many friends in Midwest)...but most spend a great deal of time carting the kids around. If you want to be a coach you can get some exercise in.

The bolded part is the differentiator. 30 is certainly not old relatively speaking. You can just about pick up any sport competitively at the amateur level and can enjoy it for a long time. However, when you talk about becoming a professional, that's where the discussion becomes interesting. MOST sports at the pro level do not differentiate by age. And those that have senior/champion levels typically will take one's professional career into account - making it almost impossible to enter those ranks without prior experience at the main level.
So I'd say if you want to reach the top tier of a sport, age will definitely work against you unless the sport is somewhat ageless (fishing, poker, shooting, etc.).

If one doesn't start young they are doomed.
No one is going to be able to take up a competitive sport at that age and expect to compete on the level of a professional. In fact, that person won't even get the chance. It's too late.
If you want to compete, try running or fitness/weight lifting type stuff. They have age divisions to compete in. Your about the right age for marathoning, select your parents wisely.
