Worldwide, I'd say basketball. Popular in the US, many places in Europe, Australia, certain places in Asia (China, Philippines) and probably other places I didn't mention. However, I don't know how countries besides the US would react if they won a competition like the Olympics. Also the US has been so dominant on the biggest stage it might take some of the luster off the sport for other countries.

I would say F1. There are a lot of soccer, hockey, basketball players, but only 20 F1 drivers. That's what I call competition

Probably Rugby then Cricket. Their respective World Cups fit these criteria, have an enormous amount of people watching, and "the winning country take massive pride in as if the whole country "won" something big".

In most western countries, in terms of team sports it's -

1. Football (Soccer) - UEFA and other regional internationals and FIFA World Cup.

2. Rugby - Six Nations, Internationals and World Cup

3. Cricket - Ashes, Internationals and World Cup

4. Golf - Ryder Cup

In terms of a 5th prestigious team sport, there is a lot of passion connected to ice hockey both in terms of the Stanley Cup which is international as it includes the fierce rivalry between the US and Canada, whilst of all the Olympic Team Sports Ice Hockey stands out, with memorable games involving grudge matches such as the US and Russia (Soviet Union) as well as Scadinavian teams and teams from other parts of the world, and the sport also has an annual Ice Hockey World Championship.
