My husband has been transferred to Springfield beginning in October. We are looking for housing that will allow us to keep our German Shepard and our small mixed breed dog. They are both house trained and neutered. We also have a child that will be starting school this year. We are looking to pay $700 or less for rent if possible since I will not work at first so we can get to know the area better. Does anyone have any ideas about the ability to keep our dogs? They are such a big part of our family. Any help anyone can provide will be greatly appreciated.

It would depend on whether you are renting/leasing a house from an owner or renting an apartment/condo. Nearly all places that allow pets (speaking of aprartments or condos) have strict rules that limit the size of pets. Generally large dogs like german shephards will not be allowed to live inside an aparment or condominium.

Save yourself the aggravation and just contact a rental company that can find what you are looking for. I have heard that Metro Housing is a good company and have a lot of properties to choose from. I'm sure you will be able to locate something that will let you have pets. Now that kid might be a problem. LOL just kidding.

Totally agree with 20years. Call a couple of rental services. One can always find something to rent that will take large and/or multiple dogs. You will probably have to pay a larger deposit, but our doggie-kids are worth it. And if you need to give them play dates, there are at least 2 good daycare facilities in Springfield for dogs. My Lucy goes to play every Wednesday to burn off a bit of her energy (Black Lab mix).

first of all, be assured that Springfield is an extremely pet and kid friendly place. You'd be much better off going with a more local rental group, looking for a duplex or a small house (yes - you can find a house in a good area for less that $700 a month in Spfd!). When I was looking for a rental, I found that those types of housing were much more likely to accept dogs than apartments. Plus, you'd have a yard
Springfield's southwest side is mostly very nice, and very safe, and it's exploding with duplex as well as single family home rentals. I'd start there, especially since that's where some good schools are. Most people will tell you to stay away from the north side, but that's where I live and I find it enjoyable. It's quite nice north of I-44 and the land is much cheaper (therefore the rent is cheaper as well). Bonus: many pf the yards are larger. Hope I helped! Welcome to the area (soon)!
