I've lived in both. They are ridiculously similar to the point where I don't think one really trumps the other. Although I'd give the nod to Affton for having a more historic/charming housing stock and slightly closer to the city. I would say the schools are pretty similar too although Affton is quite a bit smaller. Safety is a wash, they're both as safe as it gets.

With the Bosnian gangs in south St.Louis city area it definitely detracts from the Affton appeal unless your moving there far away from the St.Louis city limits down by that new casino they put in there a while ago.

I live right on the outskirts of Oakville and it's much more superior both as far as a community and its schools. Not to mention the "wow factor" that Oakvillie provides because it's much more modern and the growth there is booming to the point that it's the new hot spot like St.Charles was in the late 90's/00's.

On a side note... The taxes in the Affton school district are the highest in the entire state due the the fact that about 15-20 years ago the principal of that school district was caught embezzling millions over the course of his 27 year tenure leaving the district almost bankrupted.

Uh what? Bosnian street gangs? Oakville having a "wow" factor? You have got to be kidding me. Also the new casino is right along the city border and is in Lemay not Affton. I lived in two separate places in Oakville and didn't see any sort of "community" feel. Just people rushing home, parking in their garage, and never emerging until work the next day. No parks really to speak of and you're right next to JeffCo.

I have to say that now that I really think about it, I strongly preferred living in Affton.

Affton is going downhill fast and with the street gang now crossing over River Deprese into the Affton area. It's not a wise decision for a family to move into a community like that in my opinion. Now as far as the Casino goes. Yes, that is a couple of miles away from Affton however, as you can clearly see as I mentioned above that the crime element comes with the territory. Not to mention the 2 pool halls on Gravios in Affton which brings even more of a crime problem. In fact one of those establishments has even had to bring in off duty police officers on the weekends for added security measures to control the violence (check with the St.Louis county police department for the reports if you like).

As far as Oakville goes. Its safer for kids and there are parks there as well as a upswing part of a growing community in that area (Jefferson County) hence the reason why Modot has been expanding the highway lanes and more family's and businesses are moving out that way.

Well compared to living in the city I'm sure the Affton area seems like a paradise.

You know most of the Bosnians in St Louis are refugees, right?

I made the decision to move from the suburbs to my city neighborhood, which is awesome.

+1. Right after living in Oakville, no less. I'm very happy and into a lot of things I wasn't when I lived in the county. Architecture, international food, transit issues, biking, walkable living etc..All things I never really thought much about before.

I also think the Bosnians are one of the absolutely best things to happen to St. Louis in the last 20 years. They are by and large very hard working and kind people. The only people I know who dislike them are the xenophobic, islamophobic types.
