How do employers (both in St. Louis and nationally) view UMSL graduates?

Do UMSL graduates usually fair well in the job market? What is the general impression that you have of UMSL?

Do you know anyone who graduated from UMSL? If so, what did they get their degrees in, and how easy/difficult was it for them to get jobs?

I ask these questions because I'm considering getting a degree in business from UMSL.

Feel free to PM me.

UMSL is a good school but not an elite school. Get good grades and network and you'll do well. My wife and I have done very well as recent UMSL grads.

I would agree with the above. I work in accounting, and we hired primarily from Mizzou because it's debatably the best accounting program in the state, but I've worked with some very sharp UMSL grads who were non-traditional students and really went there because it was local and cheap.

I have 2 friends with MBA's from UMSL, one does quite well as VP of sales for a pharma, the other is middle management for Wells Fargo. I would guess that UMSL is viewed OK in the local job market.

BoomBoxing,

Your current location says DC.

How long after graduating from UMSL did you move to DC?

I graduated in May 2008 with a BA in PoliSci and moved to DC in May 2011. My wife graduated last year and had a job lined up here in DC a month before she graduated.

I'd imagine the degree is from the University of Missouri, so I highly doubt you'll have anymore trouble than any other recent college grad in the job market, long as you've received good grades, and majored in a degree field where there are job opportunities available.

I'm an UMSL graduate. I received a bachelor's degree, but couldn't find a job in my field. For years, I relied on retail work to make ends meet. And that was in a better economy than today's.

What's your degree in 1greatcity? I have a feeling I've met tons of folks (even in previous economies) who worked multiple jobs trying to make ends meet despite where they earned their degrees. I graduated from a "mediocre" university in the mid 2000's, and had a job prior to graduation, and a "career" job in 7 months...It's been harder since that job, but it's been harder for everyone as well. I have a friend with a Bachelors in English and can't find "work", but it's more "can't find work I want" than actually can't find it at all.

It received my degree in Communications (i.e. public relations, advertising, television and radio broadcasting and print media). I have never actually worked in any of those fields, although for awhile I did do some advertising to promote an entertainment act. The only saving grace was that my current career choice requires a bachelor's degree, but not in any certain major.
