Opportunity and reward. (I used to live in Hyde park too.)
You can find people who are relatively easy targets who carry significant amounts of money or have valuable items in their vehicles (not to mention valuable vehicles), and all in a very high concentration with easy access in terms of distance.
That all adds up to a lot of crime, especially strong arm robberies.

I currently live in Hyde Park and its clearly my favorite neighborhood in Chicago.I would have to agree with you crime is going where people live now. For years we have been ignoring the issues of crack and watching the family fall apart and now our chickens have come home to roost and everyone has to pay.

People have to fight back somehow. I don't have all the answers. If people start sending these thugs home to momma with broken arms and knots on their heads they story may change.

Teen killed by St. Louis homeowner had been charged in 'knockout game' attack : News

We need more stories like that from homeowners in struggling neighborhoods sending a message that the good people of St. Louis won't be terrorized by thugs any longer.

My only question about this story is if the burglar was in the back yard or breaking into the house?

I guess it doesn't mater. What is a teenager doing out at that time of the morning on some ones property. Not to mention his association with the knock out king.

Some are trying to say this is just like the Travon Martin case in Florida. This totally different. This guy had a history.

From the original story it said they were walking up the steps and it was obvious they were about to break into the house. Totally unlike Travon Martin. This kid was 15 and already well on his way to a life of serious crime.

That was the end result I was expecting from the Knock Out Game folks...I'm glad it wasn't some innocent person who was injured/killed again. One of these days, these kids are going to have to learn, and it's oh-so-troubling that the parents don't appear willing to teach them, and that the lessons are pretty hard to learn. I guess when your mindset extends only as far as being a thug, then what else is to be expected.

American cities aren't all equal. St.Louis, along with Detroit, are definitely a nightmare compared to prosperous cities (San Fran, Seattle, Minneapolis, Boston to name a few). Personally, growing up in STL, I hate it. Sure you can go out to Kirkwood or Des Peres and everything is new and nice, but for the actual city itself, stay away. So many thugs it is unbelievable. STL is in dire need of billions of dollars of investments in order to ever be okay again. I dont think it is going to happen.
