So! My lady and I have decided that its time to get out of dodge. We're out here in ol' Bridgeton Mo. No particular reason for leaving really, just the terrible smell from the landfill and very sketchy new comers to the neighborhood... but seriously its mostly the smell and the harm its been reported to cause. Its more her who's motivated to get out of here for that main reason. GREAT! I've been wanted to get out before it became a health problem anyway. The trouble though is that she doesnt want to go any further than Saint Ann. Specifically the San Rafael apartments just off the highway there. So we visited a few places and of course she had her immediate reservations and second thoughts about all of them, this of course after I alerted her that I had looked into the numerous detailed horrible 1 out of 5 star reviews for the places that she was interested in. Now she wants to wait and see. Wait and see for what?...

I should also add that she is not interested in anywhere that has less than 2 bedrooms.

Since the really nice looking places are way out of our price ranges and seeing as we have 1 car and we're just getting by paying the bills and car note we already have, one suggests, "Hey, honey. I know how you feel about south city and 1 bedroom places but check this out. I found some really good looking places in the city in decent neighborhoods (I know the areas well since i am from that part of town), and they're way within our price range."
She looks at the photos, the reviews, the rent costs, and requirements. What was surprising was delight in her expression. But with no surprise she hands him back the laptop and replies with one of her many favorite lines, "Yeah, I'm gonna say nooo."

What she wants is clearly way out of our range. Somehow I gotta bring her around to rationl thinking. But how is that possible when someone refuses to venture more than 5 miles away from where we want to get away from and also what we cannot really afford?

I had the same issue with my wife when we were first dating. Just the thought of living in the city was a no go for me. The price points in South City are amazing in regards to rent, and a ton of the places are updated and really nice. In my case, it took alot of actually making appointments to view the places so she could see exactly what she would be missing out on. Then, I tried to spend almost every waking moment in the city, showing her the neighborhoods, and all the walkable things that make city living great...

Man, it only took about a year or so for her to come around, and we ended up in a really nice place in Tower Grove Heights, that was double the size of our place in the county for the same price. She loved it, and we actually ended up staying on the south side until we moved out of the area in May.

I hope she comes around to the idea...there is so much more outside of St. Ann. Good luck to you guys!

The city - county debate comes up often and reasonable minds can differ but St. Ann? Really?

twill, thanks for the reply. I dont know why I didnt think of the same thing, looking around down there and just hanging around the neighborhoods. I'll most definitely set up some appointments at places I saw and the ones that she actually showed interest in.

Yup, MUTGR. She can be pretty darn stubborn when she does and doesn't want to do something. I'll work her into it though.

Hanging out was basically my strategy as well (with more modest goals: not to get into the city, but inside 270 from Ballwin/Chesterfield). Walking around the shops, hanging out at farmer's markets, etc. Just show off whatever it is that makes the area worth living in as a "place."
