Have you considered the YMCA? While I go to one in the city rather than St. Charles, I've been happy with my membership. They have good equipment, it is seldom packed, it is not-for-profit, and the membership is month-to-month. It is pricey though, at $48/month, but the branch I go to also has a large indoor pool (which will be useful for recovering from a running injury I got earlier this week
)
