For your price range, I agree with Northhampton's suggestion. The Southwest city is very suburban and you can find a really nice apartment there. I used to live in Southhampton and it was very nice.

The cheaper apartments in the county will be just that. Cheaper and seedier.

That's not my name, that's just my neighborhood!

And yes southwest city definitely is more suburban (we even have a drive thru starbucks...ugh) than urban, but like I said I find it is a nice mixture of the best features of both. It is pretty quiet and safe, with a lot of fun things close by. And Ted Drewes

Thanks! If I am looking at southwest city what are the main streets around there? Any big apartment complexes? Anyplace to avoid?

The two biggest streest are Hampton and Chippewa. Other semi-big streets are Watson, Landsdowne, and Jamison. The only big complex I am aware of is Hampton Gardens at Hampton and Fyler across the street from Tilles Park. I don't know anyone who lives there but it seems like a nice complex and is landscaped very nicely.

If you are focusing your search west of Kingshighway and south of Oakland then there aren't any places I would avoid. St. Louis Hills is the probably the most upscale part, especially if you're close to Francis Park.

Most of the apartments in this area are two and four family flats in the neighborhood. So, it's a nice neighborly feel, not an impersonal complex kind of feel. The apartments are really cool with lots of great woodwork and built ins. Closer to Hampton is nicer than closer to Kingshighway, but the whole area is very nice.

You might want to try calling St. Mary Magdalen Housing Connection (Information on Homes for rental or resale)

All good suggestions so far. I don't think anybody mentioned Dogtown yet... it's a quiet(er), safe city neighborhood with great access to I-40 and would be a convenient commute to SLU. You might check out the areas along Oakland and Clayton between Hampton (on the east) and McCausland (on the west).

Dogtown seemed kind of ghetto the last time I was there. Then again it was only once. It is off manchester right? Or am I thinking of a different area.
