I believe the factory glass has the tint built-in (correct me if I am wrong), while the added-on stuff is a film strip over the glass. The one on my wife's Rav 4 looks real nice (only the rear side windows have the darker tint).

Could you please tell me : Why do people tint the windows? Thanks!

Theft prevention is one reason, when I bought my car it came with tint (dealership installed before putting it up for sale) and you literally have to press your face and hands up against the rear windows to be able to see anything, and even then it's really hard to make out anything but the seats.

Another, and probably more predominant reason would be looks. There are plenty of people who think tinted windows enhances the looks of a car.

I'm sure there's other reasons too, but those are the two obvious ones I can think of.

1. It helps keep the inside of the car cooler.
2. It lessens the sun in your eyes.
3. If you have a kid in a rear-facing car seat it shields their eyes from the sun.

I want them tinted because it keeps people from seeing what's inside. I don't like people seeing my kids, or what they left on the seats (like a video game or something). It also keeps the sunlight out, which is good in the summer.

My GF drives a 2009 Forester and her car came with tinted windows. Everything except the windshield is tinted direct from Subaru. The two fronts are light while the rears and sides are dark.

How does the Suburu get 8.9" of ground clearance? No ring gear in the diffs?

Everything is tucked way up and the diff is really very small.

Come to Texas in mid-summer and you will know. It's not only because of heat, but also UV protection... Your left hand would be burnt by the sun like crazy with classic windows.

Ours are tinted for medical reasons and have clearance in NYS (NYS law only allows up to a certain tint -- ours are darker) My husband was diagnosed with melanoma and has been through hell. He has to avoid sun exposure at all cost. Untinted car windows allow the harmful rays to reach him.
