Okay, so I haven't been into hot rod cars since the 80's--back when big V-8s with lotsa HP and loud pipes were the thing. The current crop of 4-cylinder "hot rods" have never interested me. Typically, with loud exhaust, they make a high-pitched, whiny, annoying buzz. Sounds kind of like the model airplanes I flew back in the 70's.
BUT, every Subaru WRX I've heard with loud pipes has actually sounded good--a growly lower-pitched roar kinda like hopped up cars back in the day. They sound like they have some balls. So tell me, what is it about the WRX that makes it sound so good? Other Subaru s I've heard with loud exhausts sound like the typical annoying 4-popper buzz. But not the WRX. I know they are turbocharged. Is that it?
Just curious because I LIKE those cars when they are hot-rodded and have the hood scoop and such...

I have owned many turbo cars, and the same can be said about all of them. It is the NA 4 cylinders that sound like weed eaters.
Really? If so... oops! But, it doesn't really sound much like a 6-cylinder. I could certainly be wrong, though, because I've never seen under the hood of a WRX...
I have noticed this myself, especially when I've heard a modded WRX. Could it be because it is a horizontally opposed, or "flat" 4 cylinder, rather than a "V" or "I" configuration?
A heavily modded STi pulled up next to me while leaving a cruise-in a couple weeks ago and the exhaust rumble made me feel like I was being kicked in the leg.
My 2.0t Genesis Coupe has a nice throaty roar and a wonderful burble with its straight pipes. I must get asked at least once a day about it and people cant believe its a four banger. On the way home from Memorial Day weekend strangers would talk to me while driving.
I think most modern turbo fours sound great. The WRX and EVO included.
