I can remember reading an interview with the person in charge of marketing for Subaru's North America operations a while back. If anyone ever wondered about the dog thing, he said that they were a niche market car company whose core buyer groups were right wing survivalists, hunters, other outdoorsy people, gays both urban and rural, and liberal tree huggers. They didn't want to alienate any of those groups and have a negative sales impact, so when they did national tv campaigns, they figured out that dogs and the squishy "Love" theme were the best intersection points for their buyer groups who didn't necessarily have a lot else in common and would be inoffensive to pleasant for most people interested in their kind of car.
And what on earth makes "the Subaru" (all models, or at least the wagon ones) more appealing to GAYS and LESBIANS than any other vehicle? I see no connection between vehicles and sexuality...
And even then, what do liberals love about Subaru? Suckers... GM is the partial owner of Subaru, which makes the gluttonous SUVs that you all hate anyway!

If your going to push stereotypes at least maintain some creditability by getting your facts straight.
Subaru is a division of Fuji Heavy Industries. General Motors, as of 2005 owns zero percent (0%) of FHI. Their total length of ownership of some FHI stock (20%) was only about 6 years long. They never owned a controlling share of FHI, and the only byproduct of their stewardship was rebading a WRX wagon as the Saab 9-2x.
Their short period of time as an investor in FHI has nothing to do with why people buy Subarus or GM's SUV's. (Neither does a person's sexual orientation, or politics).
I don't really think cars are political statements. I am a republican with a 2011 Outback in my stable. It even has a GOP sticker on the bike rack. Go figure.
It was purchased because of it's inclement weather aptitude. It's a great ski/snow car.

My buddy is a total liberal hipster with a beard and wears funny clothes and he drives a Ford F150 so its ok.
Ive had two Sub's bought one, and the other was given to me to settle an estate. I think they are overrated. An example of advertising determining the reputation. I think Suzuki did in fact accomplish in real life, the image that Suraru portrays. But Suzuki pulled out of America, so it's all moot.
Subaru and Volvo are the official cars of liberal places like Oregon, Vermont, Minnesota, Wisconsin and places like that. I like Volvo's better myself, my gf has a Volvo it is a great car, I heard great things about the Subaru but I don't like their styling.
