Congressmen Henry Waxman of the 30th district of CA was evidently successful in getting a provision added to the Wall Street Reform Bill, TOTALLY UNRELATED TO HEALTH, that enables the Federal Trade Commission to harass manufacturers of supplements, the way they were able to until 1980 when the powers were stripped away.. and actually pass laws to make it illegal for supplement manufacturers to provide the scientific research to consumers that explains what food supplmements actually do.
This dishonest sneaky tactic, quietly tacking this on to an unrelated bill just to get it passed without controversy is par for the course. Isn't it? It just goes to show our elected officials, more than ever before, don't deserve our trust and except for a few, need to be voted OUT of office, ASAP.

The truth will always find a way. And there will always be people who pursue the truth and give people the knowledge they need, regardless of the "consequences".
Most people (like the poster above me), operate out of a sense that they don't know and they really don't particularly care. That's fine for them. But for the ones who do care and very much want to know, there will always be a way to find out.
Thanks to the internet, we are no longer limited to the knowledge that is available in this country alone. And other countries, with a greater understanding of natural medicine and cures such as Great Britain and India will always be a source of knowledge and understanding to those of us who seek the wisdom.

Just because India has the wisdom does not mean that everyone has access to it, unfortunately. Poverty in India makes poverty in the United States look like a weekend on the Rivera. Not to mention the fact that very overcrowded and unsanitary conditions keep the infant mortality rate high, which is what keeps the "average life expectancy" low.
In more educated pockets of society, the people demand a say in their own health care, and the good docs respect and encourage that. In more uneducated circles, the "doc knows best" mentality prevails.

Actually, the provision was removed from the bill before OP made this post. What it would have done was require that supplements provide scientific research to support claims that supplements do anything beneficial. The lobbying of the supplement community got it trashed. The goal was to protect billions in profit.
Right now, the FDA may only require that supplements be safe. Manufacturers are careful not to claim that supplements treat or cure any disease. So they say the product "supports" a healthy heart or adrenal or spleen or joint or whatever. In another post I reviewed a list of supplements that a poster was taking. The supplements, taken several times per day, contain tiny amounts of vitamins and minerals made from vegetables and animal byproducts (those parts of the animal that are commonly found in pet food.) Taken as directed, those using the supplements as the manufacturer suggests could get toxic levels of vitamin A, and the other nutrients in them could be provided solely by diet or a cheap generic multivitamin taken once a day. If you eat well, you do not need to take "supplements" or vitamins. Many of us do not always eat wisely, so a multivitamin a day makes sense (I do take one --- costs me less than $1 per month from Sam's Club.). Your heart does not need to be "supported" by a supplement. It needs for you to exercise and keep your weight down with a good diet.

"if you eat well you don't need to take vitamins" Really ??
What about when we are forced to smoke someone else's cigarette through second hand smoke?
What about the poisons in our drinking water?
What about the benzene we are exposed to when we pump gas.
What about the formaldehyde that emanates from the cheap garbage furniture everyone is buying these days?
What about the BPAs that people drink every day along with their bottled water?
What about the neurotoxins like MSG, Fluoride and Aspartame that people think are good but are actually killers.
What about doctors passing out drugs like candy that cause multiple side effects that are worse than the symptoms they are initially attempting to cover up.
In these times of toxins and poisons in our food, water and air YES we DO need supplements to combat these killers.
Before the Internet medical professionals hated when the patient went to the library to research the illness that the doctor told them they had.
I guess back then doctors hated the library.
Doctors' knowledge is frightfully limited, especially when it comes to the chemistry of supplemental medications.[/quote]

Actually, doctors are quite knowledgeable about the value (or lack thereof) of supplements. They just do not have the time to sit with a patient and try to convince him that taking a "supplement" will not undo the damage of super-sized meals, tobacco, and too much alcohol. And once the health care "reform" package goes into effect, you may see an actual physician once in your life. There aren't going to be enough of them to see all of the newly insured patients. You will see a nurse or a physician's assistant instead.
