Hi everyone! While I was shopping for my neice today, the lady who owns the baby store complimented me on my hair. I immediately replied - ugh, yuck and thank you. I know, nice of me right? I have awful "fine" hair and I don't particularly care for the cut I have right now either. She said I should take prenatal vitamins because she had hair just like mine and now, no kidding, she has a head full of beautiful thick, long hair. Just what I've ALWAYS wanted. She said her prenatal vitamins did it in just 10 months.

Is there anyone who has taken the vitamins for hair, nails, etc. and seen positive results or was she just unusually lucky with her vitamins? I'm pretty sure actually taking the pills are okay because any extra vitamins, I'll just, well you know - tinkle out. (: If you have a favorite brand, I'd like to know that too. Any info at all is very much appreciated!

Thank you!

Actually, any extra vitamins you won't necessarily tinkle out. I believe that is true only if they are water soluable<sp?
There are quite a few vitamins that you don't want to take too much of. Iron is one for example. I have to read up on my vitamin info. I'd do a little more research. Although, i would imagine that a pre-natal vitamin would be pretty safe. What makes it pre-natal?
What extra is in a pre-natal multi-vitamin that isn't in a reqular multi vit? i wonder.

I had a friend in high school (90s), she had a very bad case of mono. Her doc put her on prenatal vits - just to give her a boost. Her nails were awesome. Rarely broke! Her hair was pretty but I dont know if that was why.

Thank you both!

I actually don't know what makes them prenatal. I think more iron, calcium, and folic acid, but I'm not sure what else. Mmmm - now I'm wondering what I should do.

Anyone else have any experience w/ prenatal vitamins when you aren't "preggers"?

Thanks so much for posting that article. I've been researching all night and didn't see that. It pretty much said to ask my doctor. So I guess I will ask my doctor...haha. Hopefully she'll give me a thumbs up. Thanks again everyone!

I took prenatal vitamins for several years after my last son was born. My OB said they are a very good multi-vitamin and also my insurance would pay for them when they will not for over-the-counter vitamins.

Yes, you can take prenatals when not pregnant. Some gyns recommend that you start taking them 3-6 months before trying to conceive so that you have optimal levels of folic acid built up. Just take that as your only vitamin, don't add it to anything else without checking with the doctor/pharmacist!

I had a problem with my hair thinning out a few years ago (and it was thin to begin with). My dermatoligist suggested "Maryln Formula 50". You can only buy it on-line through a health store distributor. It worked wonders. It's also good for your nails.

Believe it or not Flinstones Vitamins are the equivelant of prenatal vitamins. They are actually prescribed for women who cannont swallow the pretnatals. They contain the required amount of folic acid (400 mg) for pregnant women along with the other vital vitamins and minerals. Usually recommeded to take two a day. I dunno the effect it would have on your nails and hair but I would assume if they're prenatal appropriate you might see a change
