That was a great site and I loved the format, but there were a lot more remedies listed on Sloan-Kettering and many of them were ones that have been proven to not work as well, which is good to know b/c then I know not to waste my time on them. Still, I bookmarked this one.

One thing I've read about herb collecting is that you gather the leaves while they're in the prime of their life--fall wouldn't be a good time to gather them b/c they're losing their sap, so late spring would be best--they've gone thru their growing period, they've lost their flowers and all their energy has gone into the leaves. Or you could go to the health food store until you've got your collection complete.

Ok,I am convinced that it is no use to gather leaves now.Every country has its own environmental conditions and in Greece we gather hawthorn leaves between April and June.I buy dried leaves and flowers from the local herb store, but the berries I've gathered is suitable for use, right?I have a lot of herb collections bought or hand-made.

Yes sir, (love your online name!) you would gather the berries in their prime also, which I assume is in your fall. As for your collections, you might want to check on shelf life of them. Some of them, like shepherd's purse, have an extremely short shelf life, so it's good to know when they're expired, or if you haven't had good luck with some of them, that might be why. That is so cool though--you live in Greece, you collect herbs, and you drink them in wine. And I bet you eat wonderful olives and drink great wine--I know I did when I was there.

(love your real name ,too.It has a Greek origin: Behind the Name: Meaning, Origin and History of the Name Stephanie)
Have you been in Greece; When? Its cool for summer vacations.I produce my own olive oil.Relatives produce wine..not very good...Olive agriculture is widely developed in USA,right;Tourists often travel to the Greek country to collect local herbs .Unfortunately, because of the economic crisis we are in deep s**t now...Greek doctors generally know almost nothing about herbs.
I have to search in English language sites about natural drugs.Look what I found yesterday:

hawthorn berry decoction « wild*crafty

(and so on,just follow the links)

Keep in mind to use echinacea this season if nesessary.

Hey I love that wild crafty site: bookmarked it for later reading. I was in Greece about 3-1/2 years ago in May, and it was beautiful. We stayed at Naxos, Samos, and Santorini, then rented a car and toured around the mainland--Delphi, Mt. Olympus, and Meteora were highlights, but we didn't make it over to Sparta. We took about a month and camped a lot of the way and I'm really sorry to hear about your economy--we're hurting too but probably not as bad. I tasted some fresh pressed olive oil and it was wonderful--we can't grow those where I live.

That's good. You visited some of the most interested places in Greece.Economic crisis affects significantly the quality of our life ,so we expect the worst at December.
By the way I have already started reading digital pharmaceutics Greek books to have a more scientific view of botanology.

Take magnesium to reduce high BP. About 3 years ago my husband aged then about 61 was told by his doctor that he had severe brittle asthma, congestive heart failure and high blood pressure. The doctor put him on BP meds. We took Cayenne Pepper and Apple Cider Vinegar and then added Magnesium, lots of it. Within 10 days the addition of Magnesium in substantial amounts brought his blood pressure down to subnormal because of the prescription meds. The doctor reduced the BP meds by 95%. His health has increased greatly since then.

We have proceeded with these supplements and have read the book "Magnesium Miracle" by Carolyn Dean, M.D., ND and see that 80-90% of people in the West are magnesium deficient and such deficiency causes symptoms which are often attributed to old age when all one needs to do is take magnesium. Those symptoms include Osteoporosis, Asthma, Blood clots, Diabetes, Heart disease, Kidney disease, Musculoskeletal conditions and many more. ALL cancer patients are deficient in magnesium.

The RDA is 150 but she writes that some people need to take as much as 1,000 mg a day (in divided doses as too much at one time causes diarrhea). We wouldn't be without it.

Google the above for book or click here: The Magnesium Miracle | Dr Carolyn Dean MD ND

We pick our own Hawthorn berries every year and I make a sauch that is a cross between Haw(thorn) Sauce and Worchestershire Sauce. It takes like steak sauce and contains among other things, Hawthorn berries, cayenne pepper, Apple Cider Vinegar and a more acid fruit than Hawthorn.
