Hi from Chicago.
I am a 50+ single woman and thinking about leaving Chicago, because of the snow, and move to Tampa, FL. But " work" must come 1st. I would love to start my own business, and I need information about a specific area, (to decide whether it is the right location or not for my business): it is around the intersection of W+ E Bloomingdale Ave. and John Moore Rd. in Brandon. Why specifically this area? simple, i found an available space there that fits my budget. My future business is going to serve individuals who care about their health and look for "low fat and sugar, sugar/fat free" products. so, here are my questions:
1- is the intersection i mentioned in a residential area?
2-would the population there fit my target customers?
3- how safe is this area?
4- are there schools nearby? (I have no kids, but I need the info).
5- since i prefer to walk to work, can you recommend apartments for rent within a 15 mins or less walking distance?
Your help would be greatly appreciated.

If it were me, I personally would not open a business anywhere on Bloomingdale. The most popular streets in Brandon is Causeway/Lumsden or SR60/Adamo. The intersection that you mentioned is around residential area with nothing exciting around.

I am not sure what type of products that you are serving. You mentioned low fat/sugar & sugar/fat free but are you trying to open a restaurant?

The area with safety should be OK-but looks less to be desired-this is why I wouldn't open a business around here.

I do believe that there is an elementary school near by. There's a high school further down as well as a couple of private schools even further down Bloomingdale.

In that area your best bet for apartments would be Bloomingdale Woods (less to be desired) and Brookside Manor. I think there is 1 more apartment community but the name slips me at the moment. You can look up apartments on these websites:
Apartments for Rent and Rentals - Free Apartment Finder | ApartmentGuide.com
Apartments for Rent | An Apartment Finder & Guide for Rentals - ForRent.com
Apartments for Rent & Homes for Rent - Rent.com® Apartment Finder (mention you found the apt. on this site-write it on the guest card and application and after you sign you lease, go back and claim it and get a $100 gift card)
Apartments for Rent - Free Apartment Search - Apartment Finder and Rentals Guide | MyNewPlace (same deal as rent.com but I think they cut you a check and the last I heard-it's been a while-but the last I heard it was $200)

You will need a car here in Brandon-everything is so spread out.

Hope this helps!

I spent a short time in the Brandon area 9 years ago for a job assignment. It was growing fast at the time and I can only imagine what it is like now. I could have really used your products when living there. I did not find the area Health conscious at all. I was so thankful there was a Golds Gym in the area, that gave me some semblence of Healthy living in the Brandon area. At least the exercise part of healthy living.

I don't know where in the Tampa area your target market would be. I know I live in Portland that is known for Health conscious living. Yet I have a terrible time finding the type products you would be selling. I found many Health conscious people are looking for Organic Vegan type products and not low sugar/Sugar free/lowcarb. Diabetics like myself are left in the dark and all we may find is the Sugar Free Bakery that we have here in Portland. Not my idea of the sugar free goods I am looking for.

I wish you the best in your endeavor and there is a target market. I just don't know where it is in the area you mentioned, because I just didn't see it in my short time there.

Gold's Gym closed a while ago.

I agree with you though. I personally would love to see an Organic/Vegan anything in this area and I am sure I am not the only one...

You both are awesome. You gave me a lot of information, tips, and maybe a new direction for my future business. So, there is a market there, but Bloomingdale may not be the right location. I'll keep that in mind. Coming from a diabetic family myself ( siblings, parents, uncles and aunts...), trying to have a healthy life style as much as possible, and having a vegetarian daughter, i know exactly what you are talking about. This is exactly where the idea for a business started. To answer your question, if it is a restaurant, I WISH! I am not that skilled. Thank you so much for your help.

on a scale of 1-10, what score would you give your community in Brandon on Health Consciousness?

I'm not really 100% sure but there's a little cafe that sells some pretty healthy stuff by the spa and it's still open so I assume it's doing well. Panera has some healthy things and it does well as do the smoothie shops. If it's a restaurant then if it was more than a cafe and some place nice to dine (weekends are busy points for the restuarants here) than it would probably do well. If it's like a health food store or something related to that, maybe. We have a health food store that has been here a while but that's about it.
I'm really not sure but I would think something healthy would do well around here.

Thank you so much mquintana. I've visited Tampa, but not Brandon. From all what i read about Brandon, including other threads, it seems to have a mixture of many things. Some said it's boring, others said it's fun, some hate it, others love it...as if it does not have a "distinct character", is that right?

We have 1 Whole Foods in the entire Tampa Bay area!!!

People here are anything BUT health conscious!

& Brandon, is the last place for that!

South Tampa may have small pockets of people interested in that stuff.

IMO, People of the USA, need to learn about moderation, eating something that has low sugar in a large quantity...doesn't really mean much.

Problem is people here can't stop eating! Low fat/low sugar...smoke up in the air as far as I am concerned, it is portion control and self control that need to be taught! BUT, The key is to find people that are interested in being taught that! in this kind of roach like consumer society it is very difficult to make people understand that "food will be on that shelf tomorrow too!"

The businesses to be in Florida are:
Landscaping (mowing lawns)
&
Chains (of any sort)

Everything else has been killed around here!

There's no walking around here, most streets do not have sidewalks, it is 90 degrees out for over 6 months, or it downpours with thunder and lightning...so one or the other will prevent you from walking. (Sadly)
