Last night around 3am it sounded like transformers were blowing up about every 3-5 minutes for about an hour(( doubt it was transformers blowing up for over an hour ...but that was the sound). All the neighborhood dogs were going crazy(ours was huff'n). WE have no homes behind us so the sound seemed to travel across the open land and lakes. It sounded like it was coming from the Dale Mabry area.

I sat outside listening, but we couldnt figure it out.
It was a huge boom!

Just wondering if others heard it.
I think what you heard was a hurricane that came through - it slipped by the radar?

How can you hear a rocket launch in Tampa? from Cape Canaveral; when we in Orlando never do? all we can get from there is the trail of smoke! if were lucky!

This happened again last night! I googled it and found this thread and the description others gave about 2007 were exactly the same. I was sleeping and this sound woke me up at 3am on the dot and it continued for about 20-25 minutes. I opened my front door and it was so loud but you could tell far away. I woke up my husband but by the time he got up it stopped. He is trying to tell me it was jet engines at the airport. But, at 3am? I dunno.

We are located by the Lowry Park zoo. Anyone else hear it?

^^

I do live accross from the airport. our apartments are built really well so we never hear anything with the windows shut, but i did hear a few planes take off yesterday. I mentioned to my roommate how strangely loud they were. Even when I was living on an airfield in Iraq the planes weren't that loud. I highly doubt this was still going on at 3 am.

Maybe you had a nightmare. Or the Chinese New Year.

Even a shuttle launch would not produce noise for 20 minutes, nor would a bolide (exploding meteor) (trust me, my undergrad degree is in astronomy). TPA jet engines at 3AM seems unlikely also.

I'd guess somebody was shooting off fireworks somewhere.

I can tell you from experience that TIA definitely still lands (and presumably departs) planes at all hours of the night including 3AM, although the traffic is certainly less steady than at peak times. But that wouldn't last 20 minutes, either.

Keep in mind that if it's foggy, high humidity, or there is heavy low cloud cover, sound can carry for many more miles than usual. About a month ago it was really foggy out and I heard what sounded like automatic gun fire at about 3AM. Who knows where it came from.
