That is just too much of higher ups doing the wrong thing. I would be appreciative of an officer warning me about dangerous parts of any town.

When the guy whose job it is to 'serve and protect' admits that a certain area is unprotected, it is a problem. Instead of warning people about dangerous areas, the police should be out there in those areas as a physical presence to deter crime. His getting a minor reprimand was deserved, even if only to serve as an example of what not to do as a law enforcement officer. It is like a left-side offensive tackle saying that the right-side of the offensive line is weak.

I don't see what's so dangerous about the Shore Drive area that a cop has to tell a citizen to not go there at night.

Employees are NEVER allowed to talk publicly about their job, especially to the press. There is most DEFINITELY a procedure for this, and it's NOT talk to the media...

He obviously didn't do it directly, but you can see where it got him.

Here in Houston they tell you that it's wise to seek out an officer and ask him/her about an areas crime if you're unsure.

Go figure..

Wow, read the article and the crime stats - St. Pete at the top for violent crime! Almost twice that of Tampa!

I wonder why St. Pete is so bad? Does the crime from the mid-town area spill over into downtown and the "safer" areas?

Anyway, it's RIDICULOUS that officers aren't supposed to warn people about unsafe areas!

Personally, I appreciate when an officer is honest, but I'm surprised that North Shore would be considered dangerous-lots of folks with BIG money live around there.

As far as St. Pete's crime being a spill over from Mid-Town- I don't think it's just that. Almost all neighborhoods seem to be attracting a more transient renter based resident. I'm thinking we're seeing the affects of all the speculative real estate transactions of a few years ago-snapping up multiple single family homes and then renting them out. Nothing changes a neighborhood like having owner occupied homes suddenly become rentals, especially if it's done in quantity.
