The Sand Mountain that was located just south of the small rural town of Ft. Meade, FL is no more. My brother and I played on that giant sand pile as kids. When I came back to FL it was gone. The owners had mined that playground for the phosphate that was left from the original mining. New chemical process allowed them to remove phosphate that previous technology left behind. I was deeply saddened to see a part of my history gone. I never understood why someone didn't realize the long term value of the play ground VS the one time value of the phosphate. The owners had every right to mine it down as it did belong to them. I've done some searching for info on the web and came up empty handed. From what I was told the mining company which was Swift Chemicals (my dad worked for them for 17 years) that built the original Sand Mountain had been bought out by a foreign investment company who would have had no long term interest in such a historic place for the long term. If I can get my hands on a copyright free photo I'll post. Please if you happen to have a family taken photo of Sand Mountain will you share here?

Thanks for the memories. The links work if you remove the leading and ending brackets and their contents.

Thanks for the pic's. I have a friend who has lived in that area all of her 48 years and I know I will see her on Tuesday. I will ask her. My guess would be over the years the property was sold off by whoever owned it or inherited it. And people didn't go there because there were no other tourist attractions in the area. I recently moved to the area and love it. I feel like I found my own little piece of heaven.

I asked my friend about it and she told me she really didn't know. She said she remembers playing there and that you could see it from HWY 17. I understand how you feel about the long term value of the play ground. On the other hand I can understand how a large corporation would put a stop to the fun people had there for fear of a lawsuit. The pic's jasm333 posted were from the good old days when children minded their parents and parents looked the situation over and gave them permission or not. It was called common sense back then.
