I'm an electrician and am relocating to Tampa probably by the end of August. I've been doing a lot of searching and can't really find a lot of answers. Specifically I've been trying to find out what tickets there are and requirement to write for them - hoping I'll just have to learn the differences in your code and write the exam. However I haven't found anything except for someone who wants to own their own company and get a contractor license. What about the people who work for contractors? What license do they get? Or is everyone who works with electrical qualified to own and operate a business?

Also I'd like to explore getting into a utility. I am a licensed electrician but my specialty is in high voltage (up to 44kV, not sure what voltages you use down there though) but it seems like a good fit? I see you have TECO which looks like a large utility. Are they the only game in town or are there other utilities down there? Just trying to figure out who's door I need to knock on when I get there.

Thanks for any help!
Ryan

There is also Florida Power and Light, but they are mainly in South Florida, and have only a few locations over here. Definitely not enough to create TECO any serious competition.

I don't know....maybe try searching for FL electrician unions or IBEW, they may be able to answer your questions. There are also small co-ops besides TECO like SECO and Withlachochee River Electric Co-Op as well. I think they just buy their power from FPL.

For large utilities, there is also Progress Energy in the Tampa Bay area.

Actually, much of the medium- and high-voltage work is contracted out. One company that gets a lot of TECO/Progress business is Pike Electric, based out of North Carolina but with a significant presence in Florida. Two other very large electrical contracting firms are MasTec (based out of Miami but with offices all over the state and country) and Quanta Services. I know that these firms are always looking for qualified electricians, as utilities continue to outsource more work as their experienced employees retire.

Good luck.
