Where they cross 41, is an entrance to a train yard and phosphate terminal, they go slow in and out of it, so stuff backs up, no way around it if you happen to get caught.

how often does that train at 41 really cause a problem during morning and afternoon commutes? havent heard anyone really complain about it and saving the $60/month from the crosstown would seem worth it.

They aren't that bad, but every once in a while, the train will come in then back up (I kid you not) it takes SO LONG!!! lol. From my experience maybe once a month if you take US 41 TO CAUSEWAY as your commute, the train will make you late.

I'm a little late on the uptake here... but I commuted from Big Bend/41 to Hyde Park area via 41 or I-75 and Crosstown combo - eitherway it took 30 min almost dead on. I usually took I-75/Crosstown in the mornings (7:00am) and 41 home (6pm) as I was not in as much of a rush on the way home and 41 was way more unpredictable with traffic and yes, the occassional train. Not sure what the Frontage Rd area is... but Mirabay would add about 10 min onto your route from my location, and I would think it less traveled than the segment I traveled and I am assuming Frontage Rd is on the south/east side of downtown and so would likely take off 10 min from my drive just through downtown to Hyde Park.
