There has been a career opening (and hopefully, promotion) in Tampa. All I know about the location is "Tampa, FL" and that the exact location will be decided later.

My wife and I have one 2 yr old daughter and one on the way. Thus, our focus is on schools and safety. We aren't looking for anything more than a 3 bedroom ranch with a decent back yard for kids. We aren't looking for beachfront or anything of the sort.... just a place for our kids to play and be safe.

If you guys and gals can throw up some good starting points, I would appreciate it. Once they give me the job location, I will take the list from here and make our way down for a house hunting trip!

Thanks for the help!

There are lots of good areas and of course lots of not-so-god areas, and it really will depend on where you will have to commute to work. In your case, good schools will be important. So, if you check out greatschools or similar sites you will learn where you DON"T want to live. Then once you have more specifics in terms of the job location, you can figure it out from there.

I just made the move myself from Pennsylvania, for the same reason - a job promotion. Best of luck to you.

Two main counties, Hillsborough - (where you find Tampa) and Pinellas - St Petersburg, Clearwater, and the beaches and several other towns. Not so familiar with Tampa school districts, the Hillsborough folks will tell you about that.
Pinellas, a little slower, much closer to beaches, several good areas, your budget will determine some. Palm Harbor, East Lake, Tarpon (east of lake) Safety Harbor, Seminole and parts of unincorporated Largo by Seminole. All have good schools.
I live in Seminole (unincorp Largo) and love it, very safe, very close to beaches, good homes in ranch style, with gardens, you can just about still get a 3/2/2 with pool for around $250k - ish - they are moving up. Everywhere where there are good schools, the good homes are moving pretty quickly.
