wow,, I barely made it home today -the flooding was fierce and they talking the same all week.. please folks you are not on horses,,, slow down!!! the people that drive on the heavy flood side of the roads at 1000 m.p.h. per causing huge waves and splash on all the other drivers, you deserve to get hit. Witnessed alot of stalled cars, and I can tell you why... self serving -ignorant - arrogant- selfish- immature drivers, and that has nothing to do with age, flying by and causing alot of water to get up under your engines etc.. grrr

The biggest problem I've seen are the dopes who don't turn their lights on during a massive downpour in order to make themselves more visible to other drivers.

I've noticed that often people drive carelessly here in the rain, especially the heavy rain, and the results remind me of people driving in the snow up north.

And yes, I'm one of those who sometimes switches on the hazard blinkers if the rain is very heavy. I'll even pull over sometimes if it's a washout. Safety first.

this is illegal

A Florida Highway Patrol spokesperson told NewsChannel 5 that flashers are for emergency situations. "First responders look for flashers to see if someone needs help," said an FHP spokesperson.
Law enforcement officials say hazard lights can actually reduce visibility making other drivers think you are stopped or stalled.
Other drivers say flashers make it difficult to see when a motorist is tapping the brakes or using a turn signal.

Thanks for the heads-up, I had no idea. I drive cautiously in heavy rain, and use the hazards to warn those who drive like maniacs to stay the heck away from me. Sometimes I think it's worse to pull over, because someone could very well plow into you. I read the comments thread in that article and agree with the truck driver, makes sense to me.

The first 15 minutes is dangerous because the oil on the road comes to the surface and makes it very slick.

People drive on may-pops. The tires have less than 2mm of thread depth remaining and hydroplane because the water can't be evacuated by the tires, so the tire rides on top of the water instead of on the road.

With technology today, I am surprised that more people don't check weather and traffic and wait an hour before they leave work. You can surf at work on your laptop off the clock and then drive home. I don't see taking the risk.

That doesnt work for many people- if you don't pick up your child from day care on time,. they call the cops, or kids at school? the dog has to pee and like me I have job # 2 to get to... some of us do not have the luxury of waiting it out.
