As a FL native I've always struggled to find "local" gifts to send to friends out of state. Or at least stuff that is harder to find, not common, etc. elsewhere. Do you guys have any favorites?

At one point I thought sponges from Tarpon Springs fit the bill but alas, they're from somewhere else now too. I prefer to send people things that they can use/consumables vs. nicknacks and the like.

Thanks!

Most people love to receive those packages of citrus from the groves, if you can still find a grove. I grew up near Fresh Florida Oranges, Indian River Grapefruit & Honeybelles, Citrus Fruit Gift Baskets by Harvey's Groves they have great fruit.

I've thought about buying one of those pretty pitchers and some Sangria mix from the Columbia Restaurant for out of state guests. They're so pretty!

I, too thought immediately about citrus fruits. It's easy to order online and they ship but it's quite expensive compared to buying from a local produce stand. I order from Hale Groves and ship to family in Tennessee.

I also heard that a local company, Toffee To Go, was recently selected for one of Oprah's Favorite Things. I haven't tried it yet, but I plan to!

When I visited a couple of months ago my kids wanted be to bring something back with me, so I had collected a bunch of shells during my morning swimming. I also got an alligator bank, snow globe with an alligator in it chillin on the beach, an alligator jaw with teeth and a pelican shotglass. Everyone seemed happy with them.

They are only available once a year. I bought some last year from a recommendation here on C-D.

Not really local, but in Sanibel Island, there is a store called "She Sells Seashells" that has amazing beach gifts made, of course, from Sea Shells. My wife and daughter spent more money than I'd like to admit there.

Also, check the Local events section of the Tampa Tribune for festivals, outdoor events where you can purchase lots of beach themed art. This time of there year, there are markets and festivals all over the TSPT area.

Thanks for the recommendations so far. The Columbia gift shop actually has a few nice things.

Agree that it is hard to go wrong with citrus if sending to northern friends, although unfortunately there are a few states that it can't be shipped to.

I'll just have to keep my eyes out locally for stuff that doesn't have a "made in China" tag
