Hello, I wanted to ask if anyone here (or someone close to them) has worked for Hillsborough County and can give an opinion? Management, organization, benefits?

Any thoughts are appreciated.

Depends on where you are planning on working.

Each functional area is managed independently for the most part, with the management reporting up the chain.

With that in mind, there is no way to be more specific unless you know the department where you will be working.

As far as an employer, it's a great place to work and the benefits are very good. Most positions are Civil Service jobs, which means you're on probation for the first six months, after which you're pretty much golden as far as job security.

You can go to the Civil Service web site and get all the details, I believe. They have a "cafeteria" health insurance plan, and you receive $210/month towards any benefits. If you decline their benefits, you still get the $210 on top of your salary. They are under FRS for retirement, and also have a 503(b) plan they contribute to as well, should you want to participate. AFLAC is available if you're into that sort of thing, and it's cheap as wine. If you work in the County Center downtown they subsidize your parking so it costs you about $20/month. Positions that are required to be on call can be eligible for a cell phone subsidy of up to $60/month.

Pay in most areas is close to private sector with a few exceptions, and they're constantly working on ways to make it more competitive. The County Administrator (Mike Morrell) is very employee and people oriented, and has done a lot to make it a really great place to work.
