My daughter needs to rent a place for 2 months with 3 other girls while they complete an internship. They found a rental in historic uptown, but we are not sure how safe the area would be for 4 college girls living there alone (21 years old). Does anyone familiar with the area have any thoughts? It is has been especially hard to find something because it is during the vacation season and the home itself seems ideal. Just not sure about the location.

What city are you talking about? Tampa? St Pete? Most downtown cores have nice areas and not so nice areas next to each other. Not always the safest place for young women at night. If you could give us a more detailed area description, I'm sure you'll get more responses.

It had issue with crime, a few years back the police addressed it, it's most likely better, but not as crime free as a gated community.
Might I suggest contacting the Neighborhoods association and asking them?

Good Luck

Did you check the crime statistics for the area? I'm mixed on my opinion. If I were your daughter's age, I would love to live in the downtown area of St Pete. There are so many activities, music, art, restaurants, and other young people from the college. The best area of St Pete is the Old NE, where there are some apts mixed into the beautiful expensive houses. What makes me hesitate is the known rough area is from Central Ave south. So that's only a few blocks (a short bike ride for criminals) from uptown.
If your daughter and her friends are smart about city safety, I would say yes. If they are naive and don't take their safety seriously, I would hesitate. They're building luxury condos downtown, so people want to live there. But you will have to deal with the homeless and other negatives of a big city.
