I have been reading on this site that alligators are everywhere there is water. How much of a problem are they really? Why do people spend 300k to 500K to live on water lots if they will be living with alligators? Is it just ignorance and then your stuck with a house you can't sell? Do the alligators break through the pool cages and enter pools or even worse houses? Should I reconsider buying a waterfront home. I can't afford to buy on the ocean. Do you have to pay someone to remove alligators that come onto your property. Are the alligators afraid of people or do they attack? I would freak out if I ever found an alligator in my yard. If I buy a house with water in my yard, is an alligator visit common, possible but unlikely, or just to be expected. Please help me assess my risk.
Really, a very ignorant post. This is coming from an optimistic and accepting person that doesn't understand why some Posters sometimes get annoyed at threads.

Anyway...

You should ASSUME for safety sake them to be in all water, but that doesn't mean they ARE in all water bodies- just take proper precautions.

I live on a pond and we have turtles and fish and probably at least half a dozen types of birds and NO gator.

FYI, alligators can swim in somewhat brackish water that has some salt in it (ie, shallow salt water "in" the ocean, in inlets, etc.). Are you also unaware that a small percentage of crocodiles are in southern areas of FL?

If you do not like the idea of living among gators then plan to stay out of areas of TX... LA, SC... areas of NC... AL, GA, MI... parts of AK. Should I go on? They aren't just in FL.

You don't mention in your original post, but how do you feel about dangerous snakes, jellyfish, red tide, blue/green algea, scorpions, the somewhat aggressive rhesus monkeys, bears, panthers, fire ants, bobcats, bacteria that mosquitos and snails carry, roaches ("palmetto bugs", for people that refuse to admit that they are in fact classified as a roach)?

If you're looking for a reason not to move to FL, then just don't move to FL and save yourself the energy it takes to worry.

However, if you love wildlife and have a respect for it, then come down and enjoy it. I never regret purchasing on a pond and putting in a pool- in fact it's very enjoyable to sit out there with coffee in the morning, or watching my kids swim, or when the turtles pop up and down for air or sit on the banks of the pond, watching some of the birds fish, or with a good book, or the occasional glass of wine. Our old pond had a gator now and then, but also had very playful otters that we enjoyed watching.

And it was the first post that popped up when I logged on this morning, so... Obviously someone found it worth the repost?

Speak clearly RM, leave the passive aggressive stuff somewhere else and address a person directly.

Excellent post. I love the wildlife here and it’s one of the reasons I stay.

If you’re one of those people who are scared to death and want to call in trappers etc every time you see something, please don’t move here. So many wonderful native habitats and animals have already been destroyed.

That sounds like a plan stan. Just gonna get hotter and less rain here in FL over the next 30 years and sea level rise can be as high as 7ft within 70 years.
