Its not scuzzy BUT it is near other scuzzy neighborhoods. Seminole Heights I thought was a good pocket of Tampa though when I spent time in Old Tampa. Tampa Heights now has a LOT to work to do.

In Atlanta, the expressway GA-400 was placed directly in the middle of Buckhead. The neighborhood fought against the project hard enough that they delayed its construction by 10 years, but they ultimately lost the battle. It has now been 25 years since it was completed, and that neighborhood is stronger than ever.

Rather than railing against fictitious events (like you placing a freeway in my neighborhood), how about you post facts? Show me the healthy neighborhoods that turned to crime after a freeway was built?

This much I can tell you: if you suggested I-95 and the Florida Turnpike were bad for Jupiter, Florida, you'd get laughed out of the room.

I have heard this argument ad nauseum, its based on facts, historically there is proof, comments on record of the DOT using highways to segregate areas this is a fact, having said that I do think its apples and oranges, if you take an area from a big city that is well served by public transportation run a highway through it, a highway that bypasses local businesses and serves people who dont live in the area then obviously you hurt the community.
In the other hand if you have a town like Tampa where there is no public transportation and everyone drives then you actually benefit from a highway, it makes your area accessible and desirable, people want to live close to a highway when they have to use that highway, it actually increases home values. A highway runs right through South Tampa, it doesnt lower anything I love the fact that i can hop on the crosstown, you see real estate ads all the time the most desirable properties in WC, NT are the ones with easy access to I75 .

Hey, all--hope everyone is having a great summer! We're still formulating our plan…In the meantime, question for the group:

How's the gun violence situation? Specifically in and around Seminole Heights, but overall as well. We just had yet another shooting here in our neighborhood this afternoon, yep, middle of the day. A round of five or so shots, cops everywhere, helicopters swirling. It's feeling like a common thing--not a frequent thing--but a common one, so the shootiness is definitely something we're looking to get AWAY from. I don't recall ever hearing shots fired when we lived in Seminole Heights, but just wondering how things may have changed over these past years. Would you say there are areas to avoid, shooty-wise?

Seminole Heights is a safe neighborhood. I wouldn't worry about it. Id say its even gotten better in the last few years and will continue to as well.

Taco Bus in St Pete sucks. They sold it to someone else I understand, and the food is bad and the service worse. I understand that the one in Tampa is still OK. We eat Mexican at Boarder Burrito in St Pete downtown and love it.

You would see very little crime in St Pete if you stayed out of the south side. Tampa, I don't know about. It's nothing like D.C. though, thank goodness! I realized that D.C. stands for dangerous city when I lived up there.

You'll be shocked by the way St Pete has changed while you were gone. It's turned into a progressive, liberal, fun place to live. We get around all over the place on the bus, trolley, bikes and, if we need it, Uber. It appears that the St Pete bus system will give you 20+ free rides a month on Uber or taxis if you're out later than the bus runs.

I keep asking myself why would anyone live in Tampa? We've only seen it while getting in and out of St Pete to the airport.

Thanks, KPB, that's what I was assuming, but we all know what happens when one assumes.

Smarino, where did you live in DC? We're currently in Brightwood Park and while it's not dangerous per se, there's definitely too much gunfire for our liking. I'm so tired of hearing "it's getting better." Statistically? Probably. But we hear or read about nearby gun shots way too often. I don't ever remember hearing a single shot when we lived in Seminole Heights. I think we're just leery now after having been here!

Sounds like you're very happy in St. Pete, awesome! It was nice when we were still down there, and seems like it's really come into its own. I like to visit and it's a quick trip over the bridge, but we're better suited to be in Tampa. You should head over the bridge and check it out sometime!
