I am considering relocating from Orlando to Tampa and was wondering where good locations are to start looking?

We are getting out of Orlando as it seems crime is just skyrocketing here. We moved up from South Florida a couple years back and Orlando is changing for the worse in terms of crime. Seems like lots of Puerto Rican gangs all of the place and even in nice areas here.

My criteria are:
Young families
I have 2 young kids - 5 and 1
Probably would like to rent in < $3,000 at first and buy when the market settles a bit
Home prices can be anywhere from 200-800k
I don't care about the drive, but I would like to be near stuff (target, starbucks, book stores, malls, etc)
Elementary schools are important but I don't mind putting them in private school

So any pointers? Any help would be appreciated.

New Tampa/Wesley Chapel.....moved here 4 1/2 years ago ...purchased a home very inexpensive because they were still building...it doubled on value in 3 years....market is down so you can find great deals and they have built a few StarBucks : ). The YMCA is Awesome for Family and Friends and the there are dozens of recreational leagues for the Kids. Schools are pretty good, just do your research on the Elementary school you Kids will be attending. Good Luck!!

Have you considered St Peterburg? It's a great place to live and closer to the beach. Now is a great time to buy a house. Interest rates are great and there is an over abundant supply of houses to pick from. Moderator cut: advertising

I agree with nitokenshi. Based on your criteria, I think Westchase is the better choice.

Great thanks for the advice. I will take a drive over there today.

I would also consider St. petersburg or any other area as long as there is some local shopping. I don't want to drive 45 minutes to hit a Target if you know what i mean.

You might also want to look in Old Northeast St. Petersburg, Pasadena, Bellair, Palm Harbor. Pinellas County, where the previous municipalities are located, is only 15 miles across at its widest point and 38 miles long, so you won't ever be too far from essential needs.
