I just visited the Tampa area and drove all over the place looking at neighborhoods. I really like Sarasota and Dunedin. Any thoughts on living there?

Can you be more specific? What are your concerns? They are both nice towns, but different.

I want a community where I can rent a nice house or townhome without spending huge amounts of money. I love doing theatre so I'd like to be close to an area with lots of theatre opportunities.

Tampa itself struck me as a bit dumpy. Even neighborhoods like Hyde Park, which is beautiful, are right next to really dumpy neighborhoods. So I went looking outside of Tampa and liked these two communities.

Tarpon Springs also seemed nice but I got the impression it was mostly for seniors.

I'd pick Sarasota, hands down. WAY more theatre opportunities and artsy stuff in general. Plus, you are right about Tampa. Don't get me wrong, I was born in Tampa and have affection for the city, but I myself describe it to people as "patchy" - nice areas next to seedy areas etc. My DH works downtown Tampa (commutes from Sarasota!) and he says the same.

Like almost any town, Sarasota has a few not-so-nice areas, but they are pretty self contained, and it's easy enough to avoid them. We have an abundance of really beautiful places to live, I think you would fit in well and be very happy here. Like I said, LOADS of theatre opportunities and like-minded folks!

Thanks so much for all your help. Yes, "patchy" is a better word. Sorry to you Tampa folks for using the word "dumpy" when it's not what I really meant. There are some great areas in Tampa, too.

I'm very excited to hear that Sarasota is artsy! Hooray! Great climate, great beaches, great neighborhoods and lots of theatre. Perfect! Now all I need is a place to rent...and a job.

I moved to Vegas from Jersey, and while I loved the shore I couldn't stand the cold winters. I've really missed the ocean and greenery since I moved here.
