I know an experienced teacher who has been looking since last summer and still cannot find work. Have you considered teaching with www.flvs.net? It is Florida's virtual school. I have heard they always need teachers. It has a great reputation.

The job market for teachers is pretty poor, at least in Hillsborough County. The county isn't even hiring new substitutes anymore. The few jobs that do open up every year are now on a temporary basis and will be filled year to year. If you do get hired, there's no guarantee that your position will exist next year or that you'll ever get a permanent position.

It looks like they are actively recruiting...

per Teacher Interview Days Registration :

The ANNUAL "job fair" called Teacher Interview Days (TID) and the Renaissance Expo are both scheduled for mid June 2010. Download Flyer (pdf) There will be one registration period:
TID / Expo Registration is now OPEN
Registration will be closed May 7th at 4pm.
•ALL TID registrants MUST have completed an online employment application! AND that online application must have an ACTIVE status.
•If your testing and certification information needs to be updated, please do so as soon as possible! Send to Human Resources Application Center 2920 North 40th Street * Tampa, FL 33605.

Also, it should be noted that Hillsborough County is recent recipient of a $100 million Gates Foundation grant.

And it should also be noted that the county's 2009 graduation rate was 82.2%. Florida averages 76% (national rate was 69.2% in 2006--I don't see 2009 numbers for national on a quick google).

Yes, they're recruiting. They're just not hiring but a handful of positions every year.

This is typical for every year. Until the 20th day count (which happened last week) hiring is frozen until pool placement takes place. These are teachers who were displaced at the end of last school year or who were "bumped" from their positions at the beginning of the year.

In nearly every year, hiring is frozen from the middle of June until the middle to end of September. Nothing new here.

Okay, if the hiring freeze is "typical," what should one expect after the hiring freeze is over with. Is the teacher market still going to be as poor as it is projected here?
