Saw an article in our local paper about a company called The American Board for Certification of Teacher Excellence that helps people in the business world get certified for teaching. Looks like a good program to me if you can help otherwise qualified people to get certified to teach K-12. I always thought that it was strange that my wife was qualified enough to teach microbiology to medical students but was not qualified enough to teach high school biology because she lacked teaching certification.
After looking through the company's site, what I found is that their program qualifies one to teach in a private or charter school -- NOT a regular public school. Those schools often hire unlicensed teachers (and offer salaries lower than public schools), so if you have a background in a subject they need (typically science/math), there's really no need for this program -- just go ahead and apply.
However, if you want to teach in a public school, you'll need to fulfill many more requirements -- including student teaching, the passing of state-mandated exams (NOT the exams offered by this company), and a state-approved teacher preparation program (regular or alternate route).
check out your state education dept website for info on alternative teaching certification. I went thru the alternative program at a state college and now have a FL certification even though my BS was in Business
