We had to drive over to Asheville yesterday so the boys could spend some holiday time with their grandmother and as we were driving from North JC south through Erwin area, we saw snow on the distance mountains and fall colored trees on the roadside! I have never seen this, it was beautiful!
Luckily hubby had a fancy camera on loan to check out, it is a Sony and with it I caught some great shots of this phenomenon that I just had to share with y'all. It was a rather gray day and some of these are a bit hazy because I took them through the windshield but you can still see the snow AND fall colors. All the snow was on the east side and if I am correct, it was from south of Boone NC down to Mount Mitchel along the Blue Ridge Parkway. We stayed on HWY 26 but you could see over to that area.

The zoom on this camera is awesome!!!

This is only a few of the ones I took, I went a bit crazy playing with the fancy camera hhahahhaa. If you want to see the others, here they are.

So pretty, MB. We drive 26 everytime we travel from our farm to our son's house south of Asheville. It is such a beautiful and easy drive. The mountains amaze and awe us every time. Tennessee is truly God's country.

Those are truly stunning shots, mbmouse! I'm very envious of y'all for getting to be in the middle of such astounding scenery.

BTW, I believe what appears to be snow is actually rime ice. It usually forms at higher elevations when supercooled water in clouds freezes on trees & plants. I've seen it quite a few times on Hump Mountain overlooking Erwin and up at Roan Mountain, but never alongside a foliage display like that...perfect timing, wonderful pics!

Great pictures, truly awesome. Thanks for posting them. Makes us want retirement to hurry up and get here. BTW, I believe the previous poster was correct about that being rime ice or as we call it hoar frost and not true snow but it is still beautiful and I am glad that you were there to snap the pics.

I learn something new every day! I did not know about rim ice. I thought for sure om some of the ridge tops it looked like the clouds were dropping the snow, but I could have just assumed that because it was a cloudy day with heavy clouds and it looked like snow to me. hahahahahhaha
Good info, thank you.
We have to go back today to pick up the boys and it will be interesting to see what has changed, if there is still the rim ice there, more, less, gone etc. in just two days.
