We are from Colorado and we are looking to move to Tennessee. We are looking for a town or city that is somewhat by the mountains that is a family town. We have 3 young children and we don't know where to start. We are tired of Colorado, very expensive and sick of the winter storms that gives you 10 feet of snow.
Thanks

The only "mountains" in TN are the Smoky Mountains in east TN.

I suggest that you do a google search of the Smoky mountains and print out a map of the area and decide how close or how far away you want to live from the mountains. Then research the cities in your designated radius. Then you can ask specific questions about the cities that you are interested in. The Smoky mountains are very nice but they ARE NOT the Rockies. Good luck.

I'm not aware of any places in TN that aren't "family towns," but then that term's a bit subjective.

Contrary to another post above, East TN has many mountains over 5,000' and some over 6,000' feet that are not in the Smokies. And while they're not nearly as high as the Rockies, they offer far greater biodiversity than any mountain range out your way.

Here's one thread you might find useful:
http://www.city-data.com/forum/tenne...mountains.html

Other cities in NE Tenn. that might offer what you're seeking: Bristol, Kingsport, Johnson City, Elizabethton, and Greeneville. The more specific you are about what you're looking for, the better we'll be able to assist you.

A lot of people are talking about Johnson City. What is the climate like there? Any snow? Close to the mountains? We don't know what size of city or town but we need close by amenities. We are so used to the mountains here as we live in the highest town in the USA 10,152 feet above sea level so we would love to be close by them.

The highest point in TN is Clingmans Dome (or Clingman's Dome) is a mountain in the Great Smoky Mountains of Tennessee and North Carolina, in the southeastern United States. At an elevation of 6,643 feet (2,025 m), it is the highest mountain in the Great Smokies, the highest point in the state of Tennessee, and the highest point along the 2,174-mile (3,499 km) Appalachian Trail. It is the third-highest mountain in the Appalachian range.

Most of the mountains in TN are located within the Great Smoky Mountains.
Mount Chapman is a mountain in the Great Smoky Mountains, located in the Southeastern United States. It has an elevation of 6,417 feet (1,956 meters) above sea level.
Mount Collins is a mountain in the Great Smoky Mountains, located in the Southeastern United States. It has an elevation of 6,188 feet (1,886 meters) above sea level.
Mount Guyot is a mountain in the eastern Great Smoky Mountains, located in the southeastern United States. At 6,621 feet (2,018 m) above sea level, Guyot is the fourth-highest summit in the eastern U.S
Mount Kephart 6,217 feet (1,895 m) is a mountain in the central Great Smoky Mountains.
Mount Le Conte (or LeConte) is a mountain in Sevier County, TennesseeGreat Smoky Mountains National Park. At 6,593 ft (2,010 m) it is the third highest peak in the national park.
Mount Sequoyah is a mountain in the Great Smoky Mountains. It has an elevation of 6,003 feet (1,830 meters) above sea level.
Silers Bald 5,607 feet is a mountain in the western Great Smoky Mountains.
Tricorner Knob is a mountain in the Great Smoky Mountains, located in the Southeastern United States. It has an elevation of 6,120 feet.

Here is a website that you can go to and research mountains by county or elevation.

http://www.mountainzone.com/mountains/highest-peaks.asp?s=TN

They are a lot different than the (54) 14ers that you have in Colorado. They may not be as high but they are still beautiful.

If you see Gatlinburg or Sevier county in the description then it is most likely in the Great Smoky Mountains. Good luck.

I would say to the original poster to first decide if they want to move in relation to Knoxville, Chattanooga or the Tri-Cities. Once you get that decided, then finding a town near the mountains becomes vastly less complicated.

There are mountains from the north eastern tip of the state to the south eastern tip. (Appalchian) and also the Cumberlands a bit west. I can only comment on the ones I am most familiar with...the Southern Region of the Cherokee National Forest. There you will find mountain towns like Turtletown, Farner, Ducktown, Coker Creek, Tellico Plains, and a bit west is Madisonville, Etowah, Delano, Benton, Vonore, Englewood. Moving into one of those towns will give you a bit better weather and about a 30 minute drive to some beautiful mountains.

That will give you the name of some that you can search on Google. Look at the Chamber of Commerce sites for the towns and you can get more school, economy and job information. Or just ask here if you find one you like and I am sure someone wil have tons of info on it.

Good luck and you know....Tennessee is the place to be!

Near Knoxville and Sevierville there is Seymour, its a valley at the foot of Bluff Mountain. There is a beautiful place on top of the mountain, The Summit on the Bluff I believe is the name, expensive though but beautiful. There are some nice subdivisions and land here with Moutain Views and also same for Townsend and Maryville.

Brandisboys I am sure you are still in the "what if" stages as you decide where you want to move. Some things you need to consider is how you will earn an income. Tennessee has a fairly low cost of living but, as most here can tell you, the jobs and pay reflect it as well. There are tons of small towns and small cities with most shopping conveniences

If you are looking to replicate your CO town the height of the mountains here will disappoint. If you truly want to get away from long winters but still have 4 seasons much of Eastern TM will be a good start. I found that parts of TN from Greeneville north through Mountain City reminded me a great deal of Castle Rock and the foothills of the Rockies, not exactly but the same flavor. That area was one we considered moving to a few years back. We loved the look and feel of the area between Colorado Springs and Denver but also realized we wanted less winter not more! You will get a small amount of snow in comparison to what you are used to but it will be winter for a couple of months.

With 3 youngsters you will also need to consider schools at some point. Much as I love the mountains in the Knox to Chattanooga stretch of TN I think you might find more of what you want outside of the Tri-Cities area going towards the mountains or even up towards Gate City in VA. This includes Johnson City (one of the three small cities in the "tri"). You may want to check in with the folks in the Tri-cities part of the TN forum for more info. http://www.city-data.com/forum/kings...-city-bristol/

If you check in the following for pictures of the property you will get a feel for the mountains in the area. http://www.city-data.com/forum/tenne...tennessee.html

The only way to know for sure is to come visit TN and look around for a few days.
