Unless Californians have an extra eye on their foreheads or are abnormally smelly, I don't know why they'd be treated differently than anyone else. When people move here, I don't think they wear placards telling where they came from. In other words, if you don't make a big deal out of where you're from, neither will anyone else.

Yes, that's true. But like I said, if you don't make a big deal out of being from California, no one else will. If you move here and constantly remind everyone that you're from California, people might grow a little weary of hearing it. I know I would. But if you move here and sincerely try to assimilate yourself into the local culture, you'll do fine.

very true. always reminding people where we came from, would be at the bottom of the list, if on it at all. anyway, we are looking at greeneville. we've done some online investigating, and from what we've seen and read, it seems to be a wonderful place. what are your thoughts of that area? we currently live in a city an hour north of san francisco, which has grown to about 150,000. the county is about triple that. so, we are desiring the small(er) town feel.

Tennesseans are pretty accepting people for the most part. I don't feel that you will have a problem. I agree with JMT "But if you move here and sincerely try to assimilate yourself into the local culture, you'll do fine". I know what you mean marn8r about other places that would prefer Californians to move to. I have been reading the Oregon forum for the past month and Californians do not seem to be very welcome by some people in that state.

I think Greeneville is one of the most attractive towns in Tennessee. Its economy is lousy, so I hope you have jobs lined up before you move there. But as far as sheer beauty, it's hard to beat. It's at the foot of some spectacular mountains and has a gorgeous, cute, historic downtown that just begs you to get out of your car and explore it on foot. It's not too terribly far from Johnson City which has a lot more shopping and entertainment options, otherwise most of what you'd need is probably available right there in Greeneville.

Other than its high unemployment rate, I honestly can't think of any other negatives about the place. Maybe others who know the area better can chime in, but I honestly consider Greeneville to be among Tennessee's nicest towns.

Greeneville (my hometown) is very nice, but like JMT said, you'll probably end up working in Johnson City. Most of the city's (Gville) jobs are in manufacturing, and the few professional fields (especially law) seem to be ruled by the good ole boy network.

It also has a *very heavy* conservative bent, if that matters to you.

If you're truly looking to have some space around you, you might want to look into the communities of Chuckey, Limestone or Telford. These are roughly half-way-ish between Greeneville proper and Johnson City, so you could commute to either easily.

Hi marn8r,

I also live in California (Sacramento area) and plan to retire in Tennessee in about 6 years. My wife and I bought a 4 acre lot in Monterey, TN, between Cookeville and Crossville. This area seems to be popular area for retirees. We'll be visiting Tennessee again the last week of October. The best of luck to you in your search for that special place in Tennessee.
