Crossville is not that bad. It was February (very cold and cloudy) and I probably had cabin fever.

I drove through Memphis once on 40. I was probbaly there at the wrong time, but the traffic was awful.

If you want to see the nice parts of Memphis go down Poplar, explore East Memphis, Midtown, Harbor Town, and Downtown. You will be amazed at all the nice areas you see. There are so many nice, wealthy neighborhoods within the city limits. These areas are certainly not miserable. No doubt that most of Memphis is not desirable, but there is still a huge chunk that is really nice.

Crossville is great for retirees, esp. golfers. I imagine it would be miserable for a young person with no ties to the area and looking for a social life.

Any city of it's size will have good and bad...shoot, even Detroit has some very nice areas.

But, most of Memphis, as you say, is "not desirable"...an understatement. And traffic is the least of it's problems.
