I thought it would be fun to have a look at the diversity levels of the mid-sized cities in Texas. Please leave out Houston, DFW, Austin, San Antonio, and El Paso (along with any cities in their metro area):

Amarillo (190,695):
White-59.7%
Hispanic: 28.8%
Black: 6.3%
Asian: 3.1%

Lubbock (229,573):
White-55.7%
Hispanic-32.0%
Black-8.2%
Asian-2.4%

Midland (111,147):
White-51.9%
Hispanic-37.6%
Black-7.6%
Asian-1.3%

Odessa (99,940):
White-41.5%
Hispanic-50.6%
Black-5.3%
Asian-1.1%

Abilene (117,063):
White-62.4%
Hispanic-24.5%
Black-9.1%
Asian-1.6%

San Angelo (93,200):
White-54.4%
Hispanic-38.5%
Black-4.2%
Asian-1.1%

Wichita Falls (104,553):
White-63.6%
Hispanic-18.9%
Black-12.2%
Asian-2.3%

Laredo (236,091):
White-3.4%
Hispanic-95.6%
Black-0.02%
Asian-0.06%

Waco (124,805):
White-45.7%
Hispanic-29.7%
Black-21.0%
Asian-1.8%

Killeen (127,921):
White-34.6%
Hispanic-23.0%
Black-32.3%
Asian-3.8%

Corups Christi (305,217):
White-33.3%
Hispanic-59.7%
Black-3.9%
Asian-1.8%

McAllen (129,877)
White-11.7%
Hispanic-84.6%
Black-0.06%
Asian-2.5%

Tyler (96,900):
White-50.8%
Hispanic-21.2%
Black-24.5%
Asian-1.8%

Longview (80,455):
White-56.2%
Hispanic-18.0%
Black-22.6%
Asian-1.3%

Beaumont (118,296):
White-34.7%
Hispanic-13.4%
Black-47.0%
Asian-3.2%

From the looks of it, Killeen, Waco, and Tyler are the most diverse (in that order). However, a good case could be made for Beaumont as well.

Love to hear your thoughts.

I find it interesting that there is a larger percentage of Hispanics in Midland than in Abilene. I currently live in Abilene and I've lived in Midland before. In general, it seems like there are more hispanics in Abilene but obviously I would have been wrong to assume that.

People move or migrate ... the so-called statistics are static and do not consider reality too well.

I would not be surprised if half of that Hispanic percentage is Puerto Rican.

I would. The West Texas Hispanic population is generally of Mexican heritage.

In Killeen, maybe.

For the rest of them, I highly doubt it.

I think he was speaking about Killeen. Killeen is very diverse, but extremely transient. I didn't know Killeen annexed more land though.

Killeen annexes TAMU-CT (http://www.kdhnews.com/news/story.aspx?s=49449 - broken link)

What do you think of Waco's numbers? Among its peers, Waco is actually quite diverse. It lacks Asians, but outside Houston, DFW, and to a lesser degree Austin, so does the rest of Texas.

96,900 is an under count for Tyler.

We are over 100,000 people now in the city alone.

The Asian & Hispanic populations have grown significantly though in the last 10 years.

About what I expected. I'd say between Waco and Killeen; there is a significant gap. Killeen is very diverse.
