Hi

I am looking at a position at Scenic Mountain and was wondering if anybody could give me an idea of the work environment there and the area of Big Springs, itself. I am a new physician and its a daunting task to move to West Texas, especially without knowing many people there.

thanks for any advice!

Here is a local car forum where a lot of locals hang out. It's mostly Midland/Odessa but there is people from Andrews, Big Springs, Abilene, and Hobbs NM posting on the site as well. Anyhow, it's mostly car people, but it's a good place to meet locals.

Big Springs is a neat place to drive through. Have done nothing more than drive through it though, so can't answer any specifics about it.

I do know that it is very convenient to hop on one of the highways and do some exploring, and the area is well worth exploring. Easy drive to Odessa/Midland, or Lubbock, or San Angelo, or Abilene to see slightly differing versions of Texas.

While not really "next door" to major metro area, it is not in "the sticks" either. It is close enough to make day trips out of several nice places.

You're going to have to do a little bit of driving, but there are a few area lakes.

I've never personally been to one but Big Springs does have a couple of lakes. I don't know and specfics like size and fishing etc. Then you're about an hour away from Colorado / Lake Spence which is generally a nice size lake...not sure if effected by the drought. Anyhow, there is plenty of small day trip activities if you're open to driving. Monahann's Sand hills state park is 60 miles west of Midland off I-20 and Carlsbad Caverns ( some of the largest caves systems in the US) 2-3hrs away from Midland for example.
