I'm searching for a home in Brownsville, I found a cute house for a great price in the new neighborhood off Dana, north of Ruben Torres. The streets are Meadow Ridge, Meadow View and another Meadow something. If there's anyone who lives here or is familiar with this particulare neighborhood I'd like to know if there are middle school age kids there? Is it safe? Do the kids get out and play, ride their bikes, hang out? I really like the area and the neighborhood had a good feel, I'd just like additional input if possible. Thanks.

That's pretty far down on east Ruben Torres, isn't it? I think I've seen Dana Road but I'm not familiar with the neighborhoods around there so I really couldn't offer an assessment.

But make sure you'd be zoned for Vela Middle and Hanna High schools. You really don't want your child going to Garcia Middle (I think that's the one near there) and Rivera High because those schools include some VERY rough areas/kids. It doesn't matter how good the facilities, faculty and principal are if your son is being beaten up in the locker room or outside.

I don't think you'd be zoned for Vela there, frankly. They rezone for the high schools all of the time because they're over-crowded so that's a toss-up.

it's actually very near vela. the neighborhood is north of ruben torres on dana, which is east of paredes line.... there's a very scary neighborhood between meadowview and paredes line, but a big field and sparedes elementary separates them.... is that any clearer? bottom line, yes, it's zoned for vela and hanna. thanks for the response.

Hey landlockedinmo, I did some work for a company that built low income homes there on Dana Road. I believe the majority is low income housing and 99.9% hispanic. I just wanted to be sure you know this before you purchase a home there. I am not sure what your background is and what race you are (for many people, the 99% hispanic matters if you are not hispanic).

It is mostly low income housing there and just to the back of that area is a colonial area where some extreme low income housing reside. City Data shows the median house value for that area was $33k.

Just a few years ago, I took pictures of the area off Dana Road and it was nothing but crop fields. Now it's a different story. At least the housing is new.

I believe this area is close to Gallegos Elementary and the Cameron Park colonia. Cameron Park used to be a bad neighborhood. Most people there are nice but you have your bad ones. I have friends that live or lived there.

I would ask around to find out if it affects your neighborhood.

If I remember correctly, the schools zoned for this area are Gallegos, Garcia M.S. and Hanna H.S.

Also ask about flooding. Back in 2001 or 2002 there was a very bad flood. Ruben Torres Blvd was flooded from Paredes all the way to the railroad tracks close to Padre Island Hwy. I don't remember how the neighborhood was affected but the road was flooded.

In Brownsville? Do you know where it is?

But, in answer to your question, No.
