In my recent move back to Texas, I am staying at my mom's house for the time being but I still have my current MI CDL license and both my cars still have the MI plates, which expires next March.

Now, I know that you have to get a TX DL within 30 days as well as getting the cars switched over as well, but I have a few issues though.

For one, I do not like Harris county (too big and too expensive). I don't want to register either of my cars in Harris because of the high insurance rates and, knowing that my second car is a much older car that needs some work, I know that it may not pass inspection at this time (horn doesn't work well like it used to and the tires need to be changed, minor stuff). If anything I would just simply put the car out of service until I could get it worked on because right now, I don't have the money to have the older car worked on. My other vehicle which I bought new last November I know will pass with no problems, but I do not want to register them in this county.

I want to register them in the county I plan to reside in, but I need a street address before I can do anything else, and I don't have any select places at this time, but I know where I want to make a future residence is outside of Harris, probably one of the neighboring counties.

So my question is, would I be safe working with my current license and vehicle registration until I am able to move into my ideal area? It's gonna cost quite a bit of money to do all of the changeovers (insurance since TX doesn't accept no-fault insurance, registration and plates and the DL) and I have just renewed my MI CDL earlier this year at $75 as well as my plates on both my cars. Can get expensive.

Thanks for any help.

I just moved from Wa. State, it costed me $40 to have the vehicle inspected, and $180 for plates, they get you for sales tax on your car your first time, next time I will only pay $55, also you will have to show proof of insurance. To get your drivers license you have to show proof of Texas registration. If your a student im sure you can keep your old plates on, as long as you show your only living here for school at least thats what my wife said.

Well, *technically*, you're supposed to register both of them when you move, and then change it when you move again.

However, due to my incredibly flighty mind, I manage to miss doing one or the other (or both!) every year, and so far the worst I've gotten is a ticket (it was *only* a year late...lol)

"Mom didn't remind me" worked when I could still pass for a teenager. "I just had my windshield replaced and was on my way over to do it when I got a call that my brother was in the hospital and I spent the last 10 days over there and am now bringing his prescription back, and I promise I'll do once he's settled" worked once. (Of course, it helped that it was true and I did have a shiny new windshield with no stickers)

So, either cough up the money to do it right, or risk the tickets...
