About three o'clock this morning I woke to a loud clap of thunder. I looked outside at a blanket of snow on the ground with more coming down.
As I understand it THUNDERSNOW is not that common. I've lived here for thirteen years and this is the second time I've witnessed it.
Just wondering how many others have encountered this phenomenon.

Being that snow isn't very common in Texas, I would bet not too many have heard this. I have heard it one time while doing field work in the northern part of the panhandle in December of 07 or 08...can't remember which year exactly. I remember one trip around Lubbock a few years ago when the day started out with a windchill in the 0s and teens and snow on the ground. It then started snowing, changed to rain, changed to sleet, and then briefly back to snow before the dry line came through and warmed things up into the 50s with wind gusts around 70mph all afternoon and dust....fun times.

Edit: found the event, December 8, 2009. http://www.srh.noaa.gov/lub/?n=event...-20091208_wind

Yes, I heard it around 3:30 am this morning here north of Lubbock. Lightning flashes could be seen through the curtains but I didn't get up to watch. We also had a blanket of snow this morning but as of 6:30 pm, it is all gone.

I have heard it a couple of times in the Midland Odessa area, about ten years apart.

It snowed most of the day yesterday and we still have about 3-4 inches of snow this morning.
I live 30 miles south of Amarillo. I sat watching and listening to it for about 30- 45 minutes.
Our dog was glad I was up, thunder scares him. As long as he could curl up around my feet he was ok.

I live just south of Amarillo too, and heard the thundersnow. That was a LOT of snow at once, but it is nearly all gone now. Great moisture though, I won't complain.
