It seems like more and more San Antonio is getting overshadowed by Austin. Historically, before Forbes and BizJournals became enamored by Austin and before it was cool to be a hipster, San Antonio was always Texas' third city. Now you never hear anything about it and you see and hear about Austin everywhere. How do the two cities compare and is Austin that much culturally superior to San Antonio? With the Riverwalk, the Alamo, south meets old Southwest culture, it would appear San Antonio has the better history and richer culture. Am I wrong?

Austin: University and Govt town turned Silicon Valley atmosphere in burbs and Berkely in the core.. Austin was kind of anti growth until the 1980s

San Antonio: Military base and tourist town. More traditional.

San Antonio is a lot more Hispanic/Latino and probably working class. Austin, more white collar and less spanish/catholic inluence and much more German lutheran (traditionally)

San Antonio dominates Austin in several categories and Austin does the same. San Antonio is mentioned in the national media a lot plus it has major sports franchises, but what city gets more attention than, Austin? San Antonio is a white collar city overall. Austin is 40% hispanic while S.A. is between 50 and 60%. They both compliment each other.

Yeah, I think Austin is starting to eclipse San Antonio as a destination/growing metro area.

Austin is moving up the charts, S.A. as well, maybe in 20 years it will be the same size and it could possibly eclipse it. Its crazy Austin isn't far from 1 million city proper population.

To Whomever repped my comment, no Austin is nowhere near Houston League so it's not eclipsing Houston. That's like saying Houston is eclipsing New York. It's not even close. Now I like Austin, let's just not get crazy though.

Austin is more transplant friendly, has a California vibe to it almost. As an outsider moving to the area, Austin hands down.

More friendly? that's subjective. Now I would agree, it does have a California Vibe to it.

Transplant friendly- meaning if you are not from San Antonio or Austin, I think you would find the adjustment to Austin easier as an outsider.
